The biggest public analysis of OpenRTB bid request logs ever recorded. 60 billion impressions offered for sale. No sampling. And the results are just as bad as you’d think.
53.25% (more than half!) came from identifiers that do not behave like human beings. And probably aren't.
How did we know? By doing some pretty simple checks:
⁃ Bid requests from IPs registered to data centers, cloud providers and commercial proxies. Phones do not live in AWS.
⁃ IP farms. 5,000 or more distinct device IDs served from a single IP in one day, calibrated well above what carrier NAT legitimately produces.
⁃ IP diversity. One device appearing on 20 or more distinct IP addresses in a day. No commute produces that.
Then there’s the finding I have not seen published anywhere. Flagged MAIDs and flagged IPs decay on completely different clocks. Across 15 weeks of production runs, 53% of flagged device IDs appeared in exactly one week and never again. 79% of flagged IPs recurred, and 7% showed up in every run across four months.
Meaning this activity that we're highlighting? It's still happening. If you buy a lot of programmatic ad space, especially in mobile, this is probably happening to you.

Focus on Google Ads? I've known @acfou for a long time. He's one of the smartest people I know on the ad fraud front -> FouAnalytics and fraud0 Partner to Bring Automated Google Ads Refunds to Advertisers
"To activate, advertisers simply add a JavaScript tag to their website and connect their Google Ads account. The fraud0 AI for Google Ads Refunds runs continuously in the background, monitoring traffic and handling the refund workflow automatically. Beyond recovery, fraud0 helps advertisers prevent future waste through placement blocking, audience exclusions and the continuous identification of recurring invalid traffic sources."

Massive news from Google today (futurism.com/artificial-inte…) -- they are finally going to be down ranking AI slop publishers who are deceptive about their owners / authors / writers. Big congrats to @futurism and their pieces on the BBM network which broke the camels back!
This is a fabulous piece from @mags_h11 & Jon Christian about AI slop websites from BBM.
fun-fact: I was able to literally 1-shot prompt the DecryptAds MCP to build this entire map of their publisher sites through countless pivots into low density accountIDs + other IDs...

Genuinely had fun with @acfou on this latest episode of Deeper diligence.
Tons of talks about ad attribution and fraud!

This is probably a bug but I have previously seen this done intentionally by traditional publishers as a form of traffic inflation that is effectively an atypical form of ad fraud / IVT. Should be a red-alert problem if it’s unintentional!

I agree with Jeromy. Honey and Phia both intentionally violated stand-down. They concealed that in different ways -- Honey in code, Phia by knowing where no one was looking. BUT Phia also forced clicks, a significant additional violation. benedelman.org/phia-forced-c…
