On September 23, 2022 an Oakland teacher called Jeremy Taylor was celebrating his 46th birthday. Across the country, in Pennsylvania, a troubled Jane Doe he’d taught nearly two decades prior was texting her friend, saying he’d sexually abused her when she was a student. Then, the next day, she reached out on Facebook to wish him a belated Happy Birthday. Jane Does friend told the police about the accusation. Within a few months, Taylor would lose his job and nearly lose his freedom. A private investigator hired by the school who blogs about the “global MeToo movement” even accused him of grooming two other students, even though neither had said anything untoward happened between themselves and Taylor. The criminal case fell apart during discovery, which produced a trove of exculpatory evidence that suggested the allegation was completely fabricated, by a woman in the midst of an apparent mental health crisis. But Taylor’s life was ruined anyway. He hasn’t worked since, and has spent more than 1.2 million dollars in legal bills trying to clear his name.
