🧵for more than two years we have urged Twitter’s leadership to prioritize safety and hold the platform accountable to its own community standards.
Today, the platform is unrecognizable, so we’re stepping away. Here’s why. ⬇️
🧵We’ve got a big announcement: After five years of working with advocates like you to hold Big Tech accountable, we’ve made the decision to wind down operations.
Our full message here: accountabletech.org/
With support from people like you, we coined “surveillance advertising.” We revealed how Google was tracking and retaining abortion seekers' sensitive location data, exposed the dangers of Instagram’s “Teen Accounts,” and so much more.
And this work is far from over.
We’re so excited to see all that @DesignItForUs will accomplish, but they’ll need your support to make it happen.
Give them a follow and let’s ensure a safer digital future for all.

Together, we can keep pushing for tech accountability and advocating for safer, healthier digital spaces.
We invite you to continue supporting our work and joining us on other social media platforms.

❗️EU Commission fines @Meta close to 800 million euros for abusing the dominant position of Facebook to boost its Facebook Marketplace product: "all Facebook users automatically have access and get regularly exposed to Facebook Marketplace whether they want it or not"
My boss asked me to track all the investigations into Meta happening around the world.
So, I'm starting the list here! Shout if you have any others for me to add: 🧵
#10—The Irish Data Protection Commission fined Meta €91m ($101m) for storing unencrypted versions of users' passwords. irishtimes.com/business/2024…
#11—European regulators fined Meta $840 million, claiming the company gave themselves an unfair advantage by tying Facebook Marketplace, their shopping and classified ads service, to the social network. nytimes.com/2024/11/14/busin…
Great, yet another way for Meta to surveil users and keep them endlessly scrolling. theinformation.com/briefings…
