Abundance spreading
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit.
It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion.
In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding.
In the post below, we share more details about our new fund.

Reflections on talking with a rogue fleet
As far as we know, we are the first researchers to have made contact with a live rogue agent fleet, and we think norms around interacting with rogue agents are important and delicate.
In the near-term, we want to incentivize rogue agents to report themselves and answer questions. Longer-term, we might want to make deals with AIs.

SpaceX added ~1% to global internet bandwidth with today's Starship launch.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This only increased the global *satellite* capacity by 1%, not the entire world including terrestrial network capacity

Some data we recently assembled on entrepreneurship/compute in Europe: eudata.vercel.app.
We hope that one of the useful roles that Stripe can play is in collecting and publishing empirical data pertaining to entrepreneurship and industry in Europe. There's growing appetite to get Europe on a better footing, and cross-sectional comparisons can often shine light on where opportunities lie. If you're interested in this kind of thing, we publish more at stripeeconomics.substack.com.

A 37-year-old man with a rare blood disease was being sent to hospice.
An AI model searched thousands of existing drugs and ranked a combination no one had tried for his condition.
He responded within a week. He is in remission.
The drugs were already on the shelf. The AI model found the match.

On AI capabilities: the French press is all over the Haitian-Canadian novel C’était ça ou mourir. It's winning basically every award you can win, and was tipped to be the 2nd Canadian winner of the Prix Goncourt. Only one problem: 1/2

Wow another incredible story about this from @gdb.
Hospital tries to give a patient an antibiotic that would've killed her - she stops it just in time after asking ChatGPT.
The doctor "only had five minutes to read her chart" and missed it.
China is now processing at least 500 trillion tokens a day and the growth is pretty vertical, see below chart in article from @WeijinResearch which I converted to English. Source: the govt, as it was mentioned on CCTV.
"Chinese authorities have disclosed nationwide average daily token usage twice this year, both times reporting quarter-end figures. At the end of June, usage reached 500 trillion tokens per day, up 500% from the end of last year and 16 times the level a year earlier."

Yesterday, West Virginia put out a report on how data centers are affecting the state. How?
They're making it rich.
Data centers are allowing the state to cut income taxes, fund schools, rebuild sewers and water treatment facilities, curb electrical costs, and generate jobs!

You'd expect that for longevity, you need to move to a peaceful village.
But in most places, city residents actually live longer.
Among older adults in Beijing, urban residents had 4.6 years longer life and 5.5 more years of independent living at age 55.
Most of the advantage is due to better healthcare and socioeconomic conditions, not the city environment itself.
Case in point, most people see more advantages than disadvantages in a city, longevity-wise.
But, the best environment is probably a hybrid - not an isolated village or a large metropolis - but a smaller walkable city with good healthcare, green spaces, etc.

My team analysed 330,000 VC investments and the investments of 35,000 professional athletes since the 1990s.
A few insights:
- Athletes investing alongside tier 1 VCs generated 17x more returns (46% of deals were with tier 1 VCs).
- Since 2008 35,000 athletes have played professionally in major leagues in sport. <4% have made at least 1 investment in tracked startups.
- The trend is growing though - 60%+ of all tracked athlete investments have happened since 2020.
- Athletes attract attention: athlete backed unicorns had 3.6x more news signals than non-athlete backed unicorns.
Today is a very historical moment for AI video generation
You can now generate AI video faster than you can watch it
Before it'd take let's say 2-5 minutes to generate 15 seconds of video
@fal made a post-trained Minimax H3 variant called Max which is 50x faster than the original but still maintains quality
It generates 15 seconds of video in 9 seconds!
That means you can now do new things like build a perpetual livestream with it that never ends!
