No one should engage with these bad faith arguments about AI personhood when many in tech view other humans as lesser than. They'll leverage this to justify GPT-4 contributing to Gaza's genocide and Claude integration into Palantir's MSS, responsible for the Minab school bombing.
unfortunately AI safety is in the hands of lunatics who believe that if you shut down a computer you might be "killing" it and violating its rights

Wildly unacceptable how Manifund has hired Caroline Ellison, the main co-conspirator in the FTX fraud. I used to work with @manifund for fundraising and with them as a fiscal sponsor to @pauseaius, and I’m pissed that they have brought this association on every charity they work with. I will not be working with them again after this foolish unforced error. It’s not that Caroline doesn’t deserve a life after serving her time— but she definitely shouldn’t be managing money! The charities are paying the price to rehabilitate one criminal who could have had plenty of other jobs.

You can’t hire one of the biggest financial criminals of the century and fix it with “transparency”. Transparency can not give you good judgment or virtue.

lol watch the fear porn marketing vanish entirely once senior management becomes legally liable for all the tall tales they been telling
🚨 BREAKING: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declares OpenAI management personally responsible for HuggingFace hack > "The Hugging Face incident, that is the responsibility of the OpenAI management, not a bunch of agents." > "It is humans who are responsible, not the AI." > "What we shouldn’t do on safety is to give these labs a liability exemption, which is what they are asking for." > "The best way to guarantee safety is that the creators are liable for what they build and generate." It’s OVER

“We talk about A.I. as though it were a weather event, a storm [but] A.I. is not an uncontrollable force of nature — it is built by humans and it can be controlled by humans.” – Amandeep Singh Gill [@gioasempre], the U.N.’s under secretary general and special envoy for emerging technologies in @nytimes

While a common thing I hear is "doomers are just saying this for hype", I have the opposite problem. Finding lab-doomers has been easy, getting them to talk on the record has been extraordinarily difficult. Still looking. 👀
Someone from Anthropic / OpenAI who truly believes AI might kill everyone, let's talk. 📩

If EA’s and Doomers were serious about making AI safe, they would bone up on cybersecurity and use every tool available to keep AI under control, instead of siding on X with the very people building reckless systems. The fact that they simply won’t engage in the reality of basic cybersecurity lapses in favor of extremely vague stories about alignment—with no plausible suggestion at all about how to solve that—tells you everything you need to know.
The EA safety, AI doomer crowd wants you to believe security is impossible. Only alignment can save us. But they don't actually know anything about security. It's just a theory that makes them feel clever. That is dangerous, and we need to put an end to it.

Where was Terence Tao when Artists fell? Where was Terence Tao when Writers fell? Where was Terence Tao when Programmers fell? Terence Tao was very pro-AI until recently. Most even very smart ppl will not pay attention until AI punches them right in their own face.
Mathematician Terence Tao: "we have to slow down AI. the pace is insane, and there's no reason to be this fast — no reason at all" It's amazing how willing we are to change everything without any idea what happens afterward These are extremely nonlinear dynamics

I am willing to debate Scott Alexander that AI will not kill all humans. Just pick the time and place. Any day in 2035 works.
I think you've done enough calling us paranoid and preposterous. The next step is for you to defend your position in public against someone who will push back against it. I'm happy to meet you for a debate anywhere, anytime. You're a world-famous veteran of dozens of debates against the world's top intellectuals, and I've never argued in public before, so adjusting for the relative correctness of our positions, if you're a betting man I'm happy to put my $5000 against your $1000 (ie 5:1 odds in your favor) that I'll win by some standard of audience opinion change. Let me know if you're interested and we can hash out details.

Step by step every part of cybersecurity is being replaced by an Effective Altruist pastiche. This is called “AI Safety”. It is a made up field where almost nobody knows how a computer works. You will not find any engineers here. (Experts in “AI Safety” are accomplished at extracting grants from EA philanthropy organisations, but not much else). Now they’re coming for CVEs. The cult will decide what constitutes an incident and number it.
Helpful list of all the recent rogue AI incidents from the WSJ. It's getting hard to track them and will only get worse. We like need to establish consistent naming or numbering conventions, e.g. OpenAI-May11June26-Collusion.

The future of the human race depends on keeping these Effective Altruists as far away from control over AI as possible. They repeatedly tell you they care less about you than insects, and you should believe them.

Effective Altruism is a bizarre cult. If you need an elaborate “utilitarian philosophy” to convince yourself to do good, you’ve already lost the plot. Be a good person. Serve your community. Help your neighbor. Follow your faith. When morality becomes an optimization problem run by self-appointed intellectuals, don’t be surprised when it produces some profoundly immoral results.

EA is not some big mystery. It’s a sophomoric cult that thinks poorly applied statistics, above average IQ, and post-modern atheist ethics give one the mandate to govern humanity. It’s satanism for “nice” people who delude themselves into believing they’re wise and heckin good.
we've reached the phase where a bunch of people have learned about EA or rationalism for the first time, have decided it's insanely weird and cultish, and are now reverse-engineering reasons to hold this belief
