Happy birthday to John Griggs Thompson! 🥳
He received the Abel Prize with Jacques Tits in 2008 "for their profound achievements in algebra and in particular for shaping modern group theory".
Happy birthday to Robert P. Langlands! 🥳
He received the Abel Prize in 2018 “for his visionary program connecting representation theory to number theory.”
Happy birthday to Pierre Deligne! 🥳
He received the Abel Prize in 2013 “for seminal contributions to algebraic geometry and for their transformative impact on number theory, representation theory, and related fields”.
Happy birthday to Hillel Furstenberg! 🥳
He received the Abel Prize with Gregory Margulis in 2020 “for pioneering the use of methods from probability and dynamics in group theory, number theory and combinatorics.”
A very happy belated 100th birthday to Jean-Pierre Serre!🥳
On his birthday, he received an official letter from the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, written in French for the special occasion.
Jean-Pierre Serre received the Abel Prize in 2003.
The Honorary President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, His Majesty King Harald V, has passed away. The Norwegian scientific community is in mourning, together with the Royal Family and the rest of the people of Norway.
Niels Henrik Abel (5 August 1802–6 April 1829) was born on this day, August 5th. Abel was one of history's most remarkable mathematicians. As the French mathematician Charles Hermite famously said:
"Abel has left mathematicians enough to keep them busy for five hundred years."1/5
Despite living in poverty and dying far too young, Abel's ideas have shaped generations of mathematical research. Today, his legacy lives on through the Abel Prize, one of the world's highest honours in mathematics. Happy birthday, Niels Henrik Abel. 4/5
Happy Birthday to this year’s Abel Prize laureate, Gerd Faltings! 🥳
He received the 2026 Abel Prize "for introducing powerful tools in arithmetic geometry and resolving long-standing diophantine conjectures of Mordell and Lang."
If you see us – get in touch! Professor Helge Holden (former Chair of The Abel Prize Committee), Project Manager Pål Pettersen (The Abel Prize) and Science Communicator Unni Irmelin Kvam (The Abel Prize) will attend #ICM in #Philadelphia the coming week! icm2026.org
Happy Birthday to Yves Meyer! 🥳
He received the Abel Prize in 2017 "for his pivotal role in the development of the mathematical theory of wavelets."
