Looks like today may be a record day for token volume % of open models on Vercel AI Gateway:
🟦 Open 78.4% 🟨 Closed 21.6%
While spend 💲 usually tells a different story, #3 and #4 today are Moonshot AI & DeepSeek. Adding Z.ai, their combined spend surpasses OpenAI (#2).
(Do note that's the spend for inference of the model across providers (mostly in the US), not revenue going directly to the open weight labs.)

No wonder OpenAI delayed their IPO plans. Secondary shares are being offered at an implied $475 bn valuation, down roughly 44% from the $852 bn primary round earlier this year, that makes that $1 tn IPO look near impossible right now.
Hearing Anthropic is being offered around a $700 bn valuation on the secondary market, yet they’re still trying to pitch their IPO between $1 tn and $2 tn. Good luck with that.
We all know how flaky secondary markets can be, so make of it what you will.

Axios and Wired just reported that OpenAI claims to have solved that an internal AI model produced a proof resolving the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem
OpenAI started to search for a solution to this problem on Sep 1 "after OpenAI researchers heard rumors that two Millennium Prize problems had been solved"
Axios reported that "10,000 concurrent agents worked on the Navier–Stokes effort, reaching the result in about 88 hours."

You're missing the core drama of the story: Tristan is softly accusing OpenAI of having stolen their result from Codex chat logs.
Tristan then claims OpenAI tried to threaten him to not publicly disclose this, and that they'd give him the Clay Prize ($1M) as the "closest humans to the problem" if he'd agree to disavow his co-author, @__alpoge__ , who is at Anthropic.
This is HBO-level drama, but with math proofs.
WORLD'S TOP MATHEMATICIAN SAYS AI MAY BE MAKING US TOO EFFICIENT
terence tao talks about how he used to go to the library for one paper and randomly find another one sitting next to it
now u type exactly what u need into search or ai and get it in seconds
his take:
"you actually do need a certain level of distraction in your life."
and i think this goes way beyond math
we keep treating everything between the question and the answer like wasted time, but sometimes thats literally where the learning happened
u looked for one thing, read something u didnt need, got confused, went somewhere else and came back knowing more than u originally asked for
ai removing all that friction is insanely useful, i use it every day. i just dont think every second we remove from the process was useless
sometimes getting the answer slower was part of what made the answer yours
