20 years ago, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered for speaking truth to power in Putin’s Russia. She exposed the brutality of war. She gave a voice to its victims. And she refused to be intimidated into silence. This cost her life. But her memory is carried by so many to this day. Press freedom in Russia has now only been crushed further. But Anna’s voice continues to travel far beyond Russia’s borders. She remains a symbol of courage, of fearless journalism and of the power of truth in the face of oppression. Today, we honour Anna’s legacy. And we think of all those who continue the work she gave her life for.

Félicitations à Henri Kagan of France and Kenso Soai of Japan for winning this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry. Their discoveries have opened new avenues for scientific research, including the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. Since this July, Japan is officially associated with Horizon Europe. This means that Japanese researchers and organisations can now take part in the world's largest public research and innovation programme. Together, Europe and Japan will continue breaking new frontiers.

Good meeting with @Christodulides in the margins of the MED9. We discussed the Cyprus settlement process. And we talked about the next steps on Cyprus’ path into Schengen. Our exchange also focused on next week’s crucial EUCO, where we will discuss lowering energy prices and the cost of living.

Today marks three years since the terrorist attacks of 7 October in Israel. We honour the victims and stand with the families who still carry the heavy weight of grief. We remember the young lives cut short at a music festival. And the long ordeal of the hostages. The EU stands with all those whose lives were forever changed by that day. The unspeakable savagery and terror of 7 October must never happen again. The EU remains ready to help turn today’s fragile ceasefire into a durable peace, based on a two-state solution. And remains equally convinced that nothing justifies terror.
