Big announcement: We are taking on the largest landlord in America.
Yesterday, our housing watchdog group filed 114 civil rights violations across six states and DC against mega landlord, Greystar.
The filings are the culmination of a multistate undercover sting operation in which our army of undercover investigators posed as families with housing vouchers to test Greystar's compliance with state fair housing laws.
The evidence we uncovered was overwhelming in both its scope and severity. Greystar has been committing mass civil rights violations at a scale unlike anything our organization has ever seen. Never before have we encountered a landlord that operates with such an utter disdain toward the rule of law as Greystar.
The largest landlord in America is the most discriminatory landlord in America, and today marks the beginning of Greystar’s reckoning.

I fear that the first political candidate to run an entire campaign on banning political spam texts will get my vote, no matter how catastrophically terrible they are on every other issue.
“If you’re a young person working multiple jobs, spending 70% of your income on rent, and barely finding time to survive, let alone knock on doors, your opinion is inferior and unworthy of consideration.”
Great way to build a mass political movement!

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Big announcement: we are taking on the former Attorney General and Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer.
An investigation by our watchdog group uncovered that Spitzer’s real estate company had cheated on over $40 million in tax benefits by systematically illegally overcharging tenants in rent.
The tragedy of Spitzer is that, despite his infamous personal failings, as Attorney General he was one of the fiercest crusaders against financial fraud in American history. He once stood a bulwark between corporate power and the people it exploited, and now he’s accused of exploiting those very people.
The sheriff of Wall Street is now the man he used to chase.

New York City desperately needs more housing, and tax incentives can play an important role in encouraging its construction. The answer isn’t to stop building housing or abandon housing subsidy programs. To the contrary, the answer is to build a ton of housing while pairing those public benefits with proactive and systematic law enforcement. At the end of the day, New York needs a housing boom, not a rent fraud boom. And this class action is a call on our government to deliver the best of both worlds.

This isn’t hard. LLs who collect tax breaks w/ one hand shouldn’t be illegally raising the rents on struggling #NYers w/ the other.
A fraud is a fraud. TY to @aaronAcarr + @housingrightsUS for protecting tenants, esp. during an affordability crisis.
