You are an AI engineer now. That means you need to deeply understand the toolchain underneath you:
1. Chain of thought
2. Traces
3. Harness design
4. Benchmarking/evals
5. Sandboxing, safety/control
So many people are just trying to shortcut everything by throwing xhigh thinking at every problem and installing skillslop repos or agent memory projects that promise token savings or to 'make your agent smarter', whatever.
I see so little curiosity for how anything works, and so much laziness of people just wanting to eat at the trough of whatever OpenAI or Claude or X throws down the pipe at them.
If you say you're an engineer, act like one!

Also, local models seem inevitable.
I want to be able to run a “good enough” model on my laptop, or even on my phone, and not depend on paying for an API that changes prices in ways I don’t control.
AI labs will hate this idea of the future, cloud providers will love it tho.

Can we really blame them when for decades managers have pushed the idea that software engineering is coding.
With their focus on LoC to measure productivity and LeetCode to assess engineers?
Job specs that demand specific programming languages and frameworks.
Yet never ask for software engineering skills?
A buttload of developers are going through a tough time right now.
Their identity has always been tied to their ability to write code, so now they feel threatened by this new era where *anyone* can write code.
If they don't write code anymore, who are they?
I'm very pragmatic, and yet I've struggled with this too, so I totally understand how tough it must be for others.
You'll hear from these people everywhere. They are the ones fighting with everything they've got against AI-generated code.
But they must understand this is an uphill battle.
Manually writing code is destined to disappear. There's no going back.

Everyone knows that 15 minutes before standup is the most productive time.
This is when developers do highly-focused last-minute work just to give some updates.
So, in order to increase productivity, we now have 4 standups a day.
I get the impression AI makes a lot of people addicted to their work the way some get addicted to video games because it lowers willpower/activation energy needed to get to the next incremental bit of reward by taking care of the tedious stuff

People who say that managing coding agents is the same as being an engineering manager are self-reporting.
1) Either they never worked with good programmers
2) They are soulless dehumanizing ghouls who love replaceable cogs

Suddenly you sound distinctively different from 80%+ ppl who do and output the same verbose + nicely formatted stuff that feels all the same (+ most ppl stop paying attention midway)

I don’t understand why you all put up with coworkers sending you PR descriptions that are 12 paragraphs of AI slop they haven’t even read.
I'm not happy about the state of leadership in Rails (to put it mildly) but I like this perspective.

Very happy to support this on behalf of Google. We have long benefited from open source, are big contributors to open source and in fact have consistently made open weights models with Gemma available from @GoogleDeepMind @demishassabis . Onwards!
