New from me: I've spent the past month interviewing volunteer firefighters about the toll this bushfire season has taken on them, and the resources they need to keep going. sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/we-…

I wrote this this morning to spare everyone a lengthy tweet thread. I am so bloody proud of my colleagues. If my work has been useful to you please RT. I've worked full-time as a reporter for seven years and this is my website: ginarushton.com/

It’s tough to lose my job during a pandemic, but I’m truly gutted that BuzzFeed won’t be covering Aussie news for an Aussie audience after next week.

Finally, some fixes for bugs in the COVIDSafe app! If you're using the app, install the latest update folks
For people running #covidsafe: Make sure you install today's update (v1.0.17 for Android). It contains two fixes, addressing two of the long-term tracking issues I raised. There's still a way to go, but, progress! There's also fixes in the Android app that help the iPhone app.

If you want to see one of the (now-fixed) bugs in action, take a look at this video. As @wabzqem says, it's great that this has been fixed, but it also should have been caught and fixed earlier xitter.cf/wabzqem/status/1260743…
Today’s COVIDSafe update fixes a security flaw I reported, which allows an attacker to disable the app for all iPhones in the vicinity. App has to be out of range of attack and manually opened to record contacts again. Details bit.ly/2y3Aq8w You should still use it.🧵

So sad to hear Buzzfeed Australia's news arm is being closed. The team's reporting on refugees and women's health was (and I hope will continue to be elsewhere) bloody excellent and needed. smh.com.au/business/companie…

If you're interested, take a look at the difference between the questions and the answers here. Note that the DTA's response includes the line "The whole purpose of ensuring trust with the Australian community for people to use the app is built on transparency".

Anyway, I'm obviously not the first person to point this out. It just seems a bit odd given that the people reporting bugs are trying to help the DTA, not get in its way. When people are pointing out problems and offering solutions, why not encourage that?
