Open borders… until it’s your own border. Glastonbury is built around being inclusive, welcoming everyone and having that very liberal attitude towards borders and who belongs. But when it comes to Michael Eavis’s own land, suddenly borders matter. There’s a ticket system. You have to register. You have to pay £408 for a ticket for the next festival. And there’s a roughly 13 foot high security fence stretching nearly 8 kilometres around the site, with security, surveillance and watchtowers to keep people OUT if they don’t have a ticket. Funny how that works. Open borders for other people’s countries… But a very firmly closed border around your own land. I’m not saying Glastonbury shouldn’t have a fence. Of course it needs security. It’s a massive event with hundreds of thousands of people. But that’s exactly the point. Borders, controlled entry and rules exist for a reason. And if you understand why you need them around your own land, perhaps we should stop pretending that countries are somehow different. You can’t argue that boundaries are unnecessary while spending a fortune making sure nobody crosses yours without permission.
