Seeing that the 10th anniversary of math.stackexchange.com/q/952… is upon us, I was urged to add a cash prize to a solution of this problem. To make it inflation protected: the prize will be 24 bottles/cans of beer from a widely distributed Michigan Craft Brewery, or cash equivalent.

Pet peeve: don't rank your student as "within the top 5%" when your sample size is 10. You are basically saying your student is only half a person.

Welp, the customer portal now gives an estimated time to completion of about 975 years (yes, the page shows expected completion in year 3000). In the interest of my next 30 generations of progeny having internet access, I asked my wife to call another ISP.
A PSA if you are thinking about getting @metronetfiber : We called to set up service, was assured that it will be done in 2 weeks or less. A guy came out soon after, ran into some problems, gave up, and said we will be contacted. It has been 6 weeks, still no internet. (1/2)

A note of clarification: my wife has been thoroughly unimpressed and wanting to call another ISP the whole time. I was the obstinate mule who refused to yield until I saw that absurd number.

Throughout they never initiated contact with us to provide us any update. We have to call, wait on hold, to find out that yet again, nothing is happening. The most that happened was a supposed "ticket" got opened in their system. Customer service? I think not. (2/2)

Did people (especially those who liked the post) know bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/w… ?
If it weren't for the obvious copyright concerns, I would totally make a LaTeX package to push for this (IMHO much better) notation choice.

Okay, superglue is not supposed to react with latex, right? I am going to assume that the rather violent exothermic reaction that fused two of the fingers (of the glove) is because I had some contaminant on the glove. (I stripped it off as soon as I felt heat.)

Ever since I was a postdoc, every few years I get the itch to rethink how I organize my notes/drafts/stalled projects. This year's "solution" is a python-based terminal app, powered by a BibTeX database.

The project was also motivated in part by me getting tired of all those console/terminal bibliography managers that insist on storing data in YAML (or worse, in SQL). For me personally it is much easier if the backend data is in Bib(La)TeX.

(a) I use my uni's webmail for a mail client (b) Couldn't be bothered to change time-zone settings when I left for sabbatical As my sabbatical is coming to an end, I've just figured out why I've been feeling a lot more guilty this year than normal about my late email responses.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but to be clear: I don't have an urgent wish to do a special issue. I was more thinking along the lines of "rather than complaining about the filth, is there anything we can do to clean it up from within". It sounds like the answer is no.
I know we make fun of certain publishers for essentially spamming the universe, but is there interest (@Quasilocal perhaps?) to actually take one of them up on their offer and edit a "Good" special issue?

Actually, I think SkyNews is just unusually well versed (for a news publication) in Einstein's equivalence principle.

Even though I was on sabbatical this year, I got roped into teaching a course (on the evolutionary aspects of general relativity) by my host. Today was the last lecture (I'm free!!!!!) and I thought I'd share the lecture notes. slides-n-notes.qnlw.info/not…
