No 6: The fact that you have been called to the Bar, does not guarantee you a drink. You need to make your own cocktail and serve yourself. Being a lawyer is not an end. It is a means to an end. Make it worth all the call pictures.

In the past, when suspected scandals or corruption arose, media investigated independently, gathered information, and consulted experts to present findings free from NPP and NDC narratives. Manasseh and a few journalists did strong work until Akufo-Addo sent National Security after him, forcing him to flee with US embassy help. Over the past 10 years, journalists have become tools of political influence; many rely on politicians’ gifts to survive, as salaries cannot make them rich. Now, issues with political appointees produce no independent reports or investigations, only conflicting NPP and NDC narratives. This gap makes the truth hard to know. Ghana needs better journalism that exposes the truth so citizens are not daily victims of NPP and NDC politics. We deserve better. It’s been two weeks and no media house has been able to provide an independent analysis of the issue of evacuations by going to the ministry to get copies of the report.

Every child deserves to feel safe, especially in the institutions entrusted with their education and protection. For The Future (FTF) stands in solidarity with the students of Obuasi SHTS and calls for justice, accountability and stronger child protection in all Ghanaian schools.

No 5: Not every senior will care about your success in practice. Many do not want to retire so build your own dreams too. If you find a Senior who invests in you, be loyal to a fault. Do not betray their trust and investment. You will reap what you sow.

All we are saying is that our girls and children must be protected. Full stop! No child should fear abuse in a place meant to educate and nurture them. We demand justice for victims of abuse, accountability for wrongdoing, and safer schools for every child. #RedWednesday

Imagine my headmaster sexually abusing me while I was in secondary school, and nobody believing me when I spoke up. Why? Because some people had been falsely accused in the past? But haven’t others also been found guilty? I wake up to countless messages from men asking me to mentor their daughters. What kind of mentor would I be if I couldn’t speak up for girls who may be suffering in silence? This is personal to me. Protecting the innocent must never mean silencing potential victims. Every allegation deserves to be taken seriously and investigated fairly.

On Friday, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, invited me to discuss my investigative documentary, "Inside the Dreaded Headmaster's Bungalow". The ministry is taking steps to support victims while pushing for prosecution.

And the issue with throwing the presumption of innocence as a standard is the problem many have with legal education in this country. You can't have basic conversations in this country without people throwing legal jargon all over. What at all are we teaching as law in our schools. Presumption of innocence is a legal standard. Strictly speaking, that belongs in a courtroom. It is not a universal shield to be thrown up every time a moral or ethical question demands an answer. Nobody here has suggested that the headmaster be thrown in jail without a hearing. The legal process will take its course. That is not at all what is being debated. The conversation here is about the ethical and moral standards that political parties and institutions are expected to hold themselves to. When 19 children come forward with allegations of sexual abuse, rape, and defilement, serious institutions do not hide behind legal mantras. They take a principled stance. They act. They make it unambiguously clear where they stand. The NDC itself should have hurriedly put together a major investigation and act. That is the conversation. Not the legal one. The moral one. And on that standard, invoking innocent until proven guilty is not a defence. It is an evasion.

We cannot keep telling our girls to speak up if we are not prepared to protect them when they do. Earlier this year, someone reached out to me about her younger sister, who had allegedly been defiled by a neighbour at 13 years old and got pregnant. The girl had been out of school since then, and her sister was asking if @FTFGhana could help her return to school. My team and I made the trip to assess the situation, and what we heard was even more disturbing. Her big sister told us that after the suspect was arrested, an assemblyman in their community intervened and secured his release from police custody. The man has since reportedly disappeared, and his whereabouts are unknown. Just imagine that. And I keep asking, how did this happen? On what grounds was he released? What happened to the investigation? And what steps were taken to ensure that this young girl received the protection and justice she deserved? Our police and other relevant authorities have an enormous responsibility to protect vulnerable children, especially when allegations of sexual abuse are reported. We need to be able to trust that these matters will be investigated thoroughly, that proper procedures will be followed, and that no one will be allowed to interfere with the administration of justice. A young girl’s childhood and education have been disrupted, and the person accused of abusing her is nowhere to be found. How do we expect our girls to feel safe in a society where the very people and institutions meant to protect them sometimes fail them? Because of the work I do, I have encountered so many heartbreaking situations involving vulnerable children and young girls. I could share stories upon stories. We need families, schools, communities, traditional leaders, the police and other institutions to take child protection seriously. We must stop protecting alleged perpetrators at the expense of vulnerable children. No girl should have her safety, dignity, education or future taken away from her because society failed to protect her. Please, let’s come together and protect our girls and children. I cannot scream this enough! 💔
