Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, the NLMA recognizes the strength and resilience of Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and honours the memory of the children who never returned home. September 30th is a time to recognize the experiences of Indigenous Peoples and reflect on the truth of Canada's residential school history. It is also an opportunity to listen to Indigenous voices, deepen our understanding of the cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, and renew our commitment to reconciliation.
As physicians, reconciliation includes fostering respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, supporting equitable access to culturally safe care, and working in partnership with Indigenous communities to improve health outcomes. It also requires us to recognize and challenge racism and discrimination when they occur, and address the inequities that continue to affect Indigenous Peoples' experiences within the health care system. We all have a responsibility to help create a health system where people feel safe, respected and heard, and where all patients are treated with dignity and compassion.
We encourage Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to wear orange, participate in local events, and take time to reflect on the importance of truth and reconciliation today and throughout the year.
For those in the St. John's area, First Light is hosting its Rally for Reconciliation from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Pippy Park's Northbank Lodge, bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members for reflection, remembrance, and a shared commitment to healing and understanding. Today, on World Family Doctor Day, we celebrate the extraordinary and unique role family physicians play in improving the health of our communities.
Family Physicians are often the first point of care and a constant presence throughout a person’s life — providing comprehensive and continuity of medical care when it matters most.
Their breadth of training enables them to see the full picture of a patient’s health, while their longstanding relationships offer a depth of understanding that cannot be replaced. They know their patients, understand their histories, and guide them through every stage of health and healing.
Family physicians bring together medical expertise and a commitment to whole-person care in a way that is foundational to a strong and effective health care system.
We are deeply grateful for the dedication of family physicians across Newfoundland and Labrador. Your impact is lasting, and your role in our health care system is truly irreplaceable.
