€ 🇪🇺 The “digital euro” that went live yesterday is not the one that lands in your wallet… Today the ECB switched on Pontes: a wholesale settlement layer so banks and market infrastructures can settle tokenised assets in central bank money, on distributed ledgers. Think of it as a bridge between private DLT platforms and TARGET, so tokenised bonds, funds and other wholesale instruments can clear in risk-free euro rather than in a private stablecoin. Who’s on it at launch: about 13 lenders (Deutsche Bank, Santander, Société Générale and others) plus four DLT operators including Clearstream and Axiology. Hours start limited (roughly 8:00–16:00 CET). The plan is to widen the service set and move toward 24/7 by 2028. The ECB will also put a small slice of its own funds into tokenised euro-area public-sector and supranational securities and settle those trades through Pontes — as a learning exercise, not a crypto bet. What this is not: •Not legal tender for shops, apps or person-to-person payments •Not a replacement for cash •Not the retail digital euro The consumer version is still on a different clock. EU law is in trilogue; a political deal is hoped for by end-2026. A 12-month beta pilot (no legal tender) is slated for the second half of 2027. First possible issuance, if everything lines up, is 2029. Holding caps, privacy design and merchant rollout are still being fought over in that process. Why it matters anyway: Europe is trying to keep the settlement asset of tokenised markets inside the official-money perimeter instead of letting dollar stablecoins become the default plumbing. Pontes is the first concrete piece of that strategy. The retail product is the one that will eventually touch households — and that one is not live today.
