It’s time to audit and cut the cost of public holiday celebrations. This is the ritual: the President, the entire Executive, and all MPs and governors affiliated with the President fly to Eldoret or whichever other destination they choose. They arrive in choppers, their entourages follow in fuel guzzlers, and they sleep in luxury hotels. Taxpayers foot the bill for all of it: flights, convoys, hotel rooms, per diems, tents, seats, sound systems and other logistics. Meanwhile, ordinary Kenyans queue from dawn and sit for hours in the scorching sun. Some even sleep in stadiums. And for what? To chest-thump, trade insults and give endless speeches? Make campaign promises of 50,000 jobs ten months before an election? Then they speed back to Nairobi in their guzzlers, sometimes hitting wananchi along the way, while citizens return home to the same problems, if not worse. Fuel at Sh227. Universities closed. Hospitals unpaid. Isn’t it time we audited how much these public holiday luxuries cost taxpayers and cut the unnecessary expenditure?
