I truly wonder what this means for hobbyists, or people bootstrapping a project for the first time.
You can burn a couple hundred $$$ in tokens for one project, but repeat a dozen times and it eventually becomes thousands of dollars.
Pre-AI, failed games still bought you skills and the judgment to discern quality work for hiring others. Now the same money can leave a beginner little to show for it, especially if they cannot defend the design decisions behind their codebase.
Something I've noticed recently is that a lot of developers who rely on AI to make their games are now realizing they can't actually afford to keep developing them.
This was always one of my biggest concerns with AI. Not that it would replace developers, but that developers would become so dependent on it that they'd gradually substitute their own technical skills with a service they don't control.
I think a lot of people are now realizing that they're no longer just investing time into making a game. They're burning tokens, paying subscriptions, and funneling money into massive tech companies just to sustain a workflow they've become dependent on.
What was sold to people as a way to make game development more accessible has effectively introduced an entirely new financial barrier to entry.
The producer becomes the product.
You've outsourced so much of your workload to a subscription service that your ability to create is now tied to someone else's pricing model. The more dependent you become, the more expensive it becomes to operate independently.
I genuinely believe the developers who will succeed on Roblox in the long term are those who remain the architects of their own projects. People who understand their codebase, make their own technical decisions, use LLMs only to accelerate monotonous tasks like debugging rather than outsourcing the process.
You are no longer a developer when you cannot function without AI.
These companies have managed to turn developers into recurring customers of the very tools they were told would make them independent.
