Very sad to hear about Patrick Stewart’s passing. A true gentle giant. I imagine, given his kindness, that it'll turn out more of us have a Patrick Stewart story than you'd imagine. Here’s my little one: Patrick was incredibly kind to me when I was a young parliamentary candidate. He'd been a party member in the area I was standing in, having lived there for years. I'd sent Christmas cards with my contact details and to all the local Labour Party members. Obviously, given the life he led, he moved around a lot, so when a few weeks or months later I spotted a missed call and a voicemail, imagine my shock and awe to hear Patrick Stewart's voice. He’d kindly shared his number so that I could give him a call back because he was keen to chat. I couldn't quite believe it (I still can’t). I was about 20 and it took quite a lot of steeling myself up before mustering up the courage to call him back! And, honestly, the loveliest person picked up the phone. He shared with me how he loved the area and he'd been away a lot, and how he'd have wanted to have helped more if he could. He wanted to thank me for the card and for being in touch, and for doing a brave thing in standing up for the values we shared. He went quiet midway through the conversation and I thought perhaps the line had cut off. But actually, it turned out, it was because he’d spotted a rare woodpecker in his garden. He was full of delight in the sight of it, and was regaling this and his recent sightings of others down the phone to me. What a genuinely lovely, kind, inspirational man. I grew up looking to the stars because of Star Trek — so many of us did. His character displayed leadership to the next generation. Our world has been, and will long be, brighter for having had Patrick Stewart in it. Thinking of Patrick’s loved ones today.

35 years without the legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. He tragically left us back at the age of 35, a victim of a helicopter crash. Here is Stevie performing “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” live at Austin City Limits, 1989.

Going to annoy all my central belt followers... My boss is based in Glasgow My office is 10 minutes east of Inverness At 11am she asks if I can "pop across" to Portree to check on a site... Do folk down there genuinely not know the geography of the rest of the country? 🤣

Morally and emotionally, I find it difficult to accept how Arsenal has approached the Thomas Partey situation. Even if you make the argument for Arsenal being wary of the legal ramifications of suspending him, what can be made of their apparent desire to extend his contract beyond this summer? Arsenal have long led the way in championing the women’s game, and have traditionally been held up as a club that “does things the right way”. Yet they have acted in a manner that raises questions about the sport’s moral compass and how it really views allegations of sexual assault towards women. Partey denies the claims but they are serious. And Arsenal have acted in a way that has left many fans feeling uncomfortable and conflicted. 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/6474118…

On one hand you have Klopp - who fought for 5 subs, winter break, and to prevent early kick-offs after European aways - once again fighting for player welfare. On the other hand, you have Kaveh - who, err, works for Sky - defending the money. So tough. Who do we listen to?
"If you don't like the Club World Cup, go and play padel or go for a swim" 🏊 Kaveh Solhekol has some advice for Jurgen Klopp after he said the "Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football" 🤔

Why is Scottie Pippen making AI images of himself with 6 rings and a computer when he is already Scottie Pippen, has 6 rings, and a computer

In a year that the BBF have no plan for a British basketball competition, they decide Manchester fans (and British basketball fans) should totally suffer by not being able to compete at the highest level possible. Incredible.
Hoopsfix understands the BBF has refused endorsement of Manchester Basketball's application to play in the BCL Qualifiers due to them being in an unsanctioned league. Manchester are now preparing for legal action while exploring other routes to play in European competition.

Kemi Badenoch is to social policy what Liz Truss was to the economy!!! 😱😱😱
NEW - Kemi Badenoch tells Times Radio that maternity pay has "gone too far." “We need to have more personal responsibility. There was a time when there wasn’t any maternity pay and people were having more babies.”

This is heartbreaking. Even more heartbreaking that it's not the first time the athletics community has lost such an incredible female athlete to domestic violence. 💔 It needs to stop! RIP Rebecca. 🙏
We're sorry to report that Rebecca Cheptegei has sadly passed away. The Ugandan has succumbed to her injuries after she was doused in petrol and set alight in her home in Kenya. Cheptegei suffered burns to 75% of her body after an alleged attack by her former boyfriend. Only last month, she represented Uganda in the marathon at the Paris Olympics. 👉 athleticsweekly.com

Lots of complaining about the 'energy superhighway' between Scotland and England today from nationalists who object to Scotland powering England. They're right to be angry that Scottish resources aren't providing us with better returns but they should blame corporate owners.
Ofgem has approved a £3.4bn electricity 'super highway' between Scotland and England in the biggest single investment for electricity transmission infrastructure in Britain. buff.ly/3SLCrw8
