Gay marriage is not legal in Japan right now. A lot of BL coming out right now include weddings because they are fighting for it to be legalized. Either through awareness and/or donating some of the proceeds to fight for the cause. This is literally an LGBT rights movement there.

As a queer person that does love yaoi I'll be honest BL reads don't always feel very queer affirming. Stories get lost in the smut and just the relationship of the two characters and sometimes authors erase a spectrum of identities aside from gay in their work. Even bisexuality even when it's so obvious that their character is bi. And this is the case with MANY popular BLs as well (even though I still like them). But stories like #AFirstOfSummers make people feel seen. It's a gorgeous BL but it's also so much more and it's so unapologetically queer. And we need more of this in the BL world.
