Stanley Druckenmiller is one of the greatest traders of all time. He helped make billions for investors, and was heavily involved in the famous British Pound trade that made George Soros’ fund about $1 billion in a day. But one of the best lessons from his career actually came from one of his worst mistakes. Around the Dot Com bubble, Druckenmiller believed tech stocks were massively overvalued. He shorted them. The market kept going higher. He eventually accepted the loss and closed the trade down roughly $600 million. Painful, but manageable. Then something happened. While he was sitting on the sidelines, two younger traders at his firm made around $50 million buying tech stocks. He simply couldn’t stand watching other people make money while he was sitting flat. That’s FOMO at the highest level. And there are 3 lessons here every trader should remember: FOMO doesn’t disappear when you become profitable. A loss isn’t always what destroys you. Sometimes it’s the stupid trade you take AFTER the loss trying to recover quickly. And most importantly, knowing better doesn’t automatically mean you’ll do better. Sometimes you’ll literally know a trade violates your rules and still feel tempted to click Buy or Sell. That’s why discipline matters.
