this article is hardly a lefty analysis but a pretty gentle plea for philanthropy, civic responsibility, etc. even so, the seething contempt it’s earned in replies & QTs are telling responses to the completely legitimate fears low & middle income SFans alike are feeling out there

The doctor who delivered Dolly Parton in a one-room Tennessee cabin in 1946 was paid with a sack of cornmeal. Her father farmed other people's land and could not read or write. Eighty years later, the reading program she built in his name has mailed more than 300 million books.
She wrote "I Will Always Love You" on the same afternoon she wrote "Jolene," as a goodbye to Porter Wagoner, and released it in 1974. Elvis wanted it. The night before the session, Colonel Tom Parker called and said Presley would only record it if they got half the publishing, meaning half of everything the song ever earned. She had been in Nashville ten years by then. She said no, and cried all night. Whitney Houston cut her version in 1992, held number one for fourteen weeks, and Forbes later put Parton's royalties from it near $10 million. She put some of that money into an office complex in Nashville and called the place the house that Whitney built.
Dollywood opened in Pigeon Forge in 1986 because she wanted paychecks in the county she came from. Around 4,000 people work there now. Three million visitors come every year. The University of Tennessee put its economic impact at $1.8 billion, and it is the largest employer in Sevier County. Since 2022 the company has paid tuition, fees, and books in full for every worker from their first day, seasonal hires included.
Wildfires tore through those mountains in November 2016, killing fourteen people and destroying more than 2,400 buildings. Her foundation was handing out money within 48 hours. Every family that lost a home got $1,000 a month for six months, regardless of income. The final check was $5,000. Total delivered: $8.9 million.
In April 2020 she sent $1 million to Vanderbilt for coronavirus research. When Moderna's vaccine results ran in the New England Journal of Medicine that November, her fund appeared in the footnotes.
Carl Dean, her husband of nearly sixty years, died in March 2025. The note she wrote to fans afterward ended with the same five words she wrote for Porter Wagoner back in 1974. She died in Nashville today. Her family asked that instead of flowers, people give to the Imagination Library, which still mails 3.4 million books a month to children who will never get to meet her.

We are proud to endorse Connie Chan for Congress in #CA11!
Connie has completed our candidate questionnaire, affirming that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people and that Congress must end U.S. complicity in it and hold those responsible to account.
We heard from many of Connie’s constituents in San Francisco, as well as supporters around the country, who wanted a clear statement of her positions on Gaza, Lebanon, and America’s role in both. We were proud and pleased to offer her that opportunity through our endorsement questionnaire, an opportunity her opponent, state Sen. Scott Wiener, has not taken. Wiener’s positions on these issues have been continuously unclear, and where he has taken a stance, he has stopped well short of what accountability requires. He does not support a full arms embargo on the Israeli government as it carries out this genocide, opposing only offensive weapons sales while continuing to endorse sending what he calls defensive weapons to Israel.
By signing on to our platform, Connie Chan has committed to:
✅ Rejecting support from AIPAC and the rest of the Israel lobby.
✅ Co-sponsoring the Block the Bombs Act (H.R. 3565) and supporting a total arms embargo on Israel.
✅ Co-sponsoring H. Con. Res. 108 to end U.S. involvement in Israel’s war in Lebanon.
✅ Supporting FARA enforcement for pro-Israel and other foreign-government-linked lobbying groups.
✅ Opposing any law that restricts the BDS movement.
✅ Opposing codification of the IHRA definition of antisemitism into federal law.
✅ Supporting Palestinian statehood and full UN membership.
✅ Rejecting corporate PAC money and backing a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.

BREAKING: Nancy Pelosi endorses SF Supervisor Connie Chan to succeed her in Congress, saying Chan "stands above" all the other candidates.
The Speaker Emerita’s backing is one of the most coveted in San Francisco politics. Pelosi has held the seat for nearly 40 years.

Scott Wiener is now the 3rd candidate to use this line. Elissa Slotkin pulled it on a constituent in a town hall the other day, and Dan Goldman workshopped it at a recent candidate forum. This is a disgusting lie that is actively promoting antisemitic tropes. The implication is that all Jewish Americans support the pro-Israel lobby and therefore, all supporters of pro-Israel PACs must therefore be Jewish by definition.
It's also a JStreet talking point. How do I know? Because it is bar for bar, nearly verbatim, what a member of the senior leadership of JStreet said to me in a private conversation last month.
When they learned that @TrackAIPAC was on the verge of rolling out our new methodology to track and report totals from lobby donors, this individual asked me: "How do you make sure you're not just tracking Jewish money?"
I told this individual the same thing that Track AIPAC has said on the record -- the truth -- that we track and report data from FEC filings, mapping donors who have given to lobby groups pushing policies enabling genocide and ethnic cleansing who are also giving directly to candidates.
AIPAC and other lobby groups themselves love to brag that their donors and members include Americans of all identities. We know that to be true. The vast majority of American Zionists are evangelical Christians. That's why CUFI exists.
If Scott Wiener, Elissa Slotkin, Dan Goldman, or any other candidate taking money from the Israel lobby would like to understand where the totals we report come from, they're welcome to ask (they can also check their own filings, it's all straight from the FEC). But they don't get to throw up this smokescreen to dodge legitimate questions that constituents have about how much their votes are being influenced by the lobby enabling an ongoing genocide.
Voter asks Scott Wiener, who's running to fill Pelosi's seat, about AIPAC money. He denies taking any: “There are people who are going to list out all my Jewish donors and say that."
Per filings he's taken $47K from AIPAC donors, including people who've been in AIPAC leadership.

Scott Wiener's campaign has received $34,000 from large AIPAC donors. He has received $93,000 from large donors to all pro-Israel PACs.
❌ Does not recognize Israeli apartheid
❌ Opposes an arms embargo
❌ Supports censorship
