My husband walked into a restaurant, saw me sitting alone, and asked if he could buy me a drink. We had been married for six years. I stared at him, waiting for the joke. He didn't laugh. “I'm serious,” he said. “Just for tonight, can we pretend we've never met?” I should have walked away. Instead, curiosity got the better of me. “Fine,” I replied. “What's your name?” He introduced himself with a ridiculous amount of confidence. I told him mine. He pulled out the chair opposite me and asked what I did for fun. For the first time in months, we spoke without discussing bills, housework, family obligations, or what needed fixing around the house. He asked about my dreams. I told him about the little bakery I'd always wanted to open but had stopped talking about because life got busy. He listened like the idea mattered. Then he asked why I'd abandoned it. “Because somewhere along the way, I became the person who takes care of everything and forgot I was allowed to want things too.” He went quiet.
