Steve Jobs built the foundation.
Tim Cook expanded it into an ecosystem.

Elon Musk was asked what he looks for when hiring someone at SpaceX.
His answer disqualifies 90% of the resumes that land on his desk before he reads past the first line.
"I don't care where you went to school. I care what you've built."
The room expected the standard answer. Passion. Culture fit. Growth mindset. The words every HR department uses to describe what they're looking for while actually filtering by school name and years of experience.
He explained that degrees measure compliance, not capability. A degree proves you can follow instructions for 4 years. It does not prove you can solve a problem nobody has solved before. SpaceX needs the second person, not the first. The challenges at SpaceX have no textbook answers because the textbooks were written about the old way of doing things and SpaceX exists to replace the old way.
He said the best engineer he ever hired at SpaceX didn't have a degree. The man had built things. Physical things. Systems that worked. He could show what he created and explain the decisions he made. The portfolio was the resume. The creation was the credential.
He said MIT and Stanford are useful signals when you have no other information. But the moment a candidate shows you something they built, the degree becomes irrelevant. The thing they built tells you more in 5 minutes than the degree tells you in 4 years.
Most companies use credentials as a filter because evaluating actual ability is harder. It requires the evaluator to understand the work. A hiring manager who can't assess engineering quality defaults to school names because school names are easy to rank. SpaceX hires people who build things because SpaceX is run by someone who can evaluate what they built. The filter matches the evaluator.
