I recently spent some time with former colleagues from academia. All of them brilliant, peak human capital. Almost all of them fundamentally unable to plug into the economy, inoculated against productivity by a youth spent experimenting in laboratories instead of building wealth for society. Dealing with real people in the real world.
90% of them have left academia in the last 10-15 years, and 90% of those are functionally unemployed. Grad school does a lousy job of training scientists to be professors (since most of them don't get the good postdoc or tenure track position) and an even worse job of preparing people for real life.
We complain that our societal infrastructure is collapsing, our state capacity is low, our incumbent industries are faltering. Where are the next generation of leaders that can push us forward?
A huge fraction of them were conveyor-belted into academia by schooling systems that have no mechanism to channel ambition and 99+%ile competence, and our universities are mostly hedge funds with glorified psych wards/academic departments on the side, running an insane pyramid scheme that exists only to prove, over and over again, the Shirky Principle: Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.
We literally poured trillions of dollars into state-funded research and effectively neutered our elite civilian technical leadership development programs.
I recently asked a few academic friends if they were finding AI useful in accelerating their programs of research. You know, to solve the Big Problem their entire field exists to solve?
Some were. But most were complaining about how it created pedagogical issues, explaining how their department decided to ban the use of AI, or how it took 18 months to approve an enterprise account, or how they tried Gemini 2 on a puzzle a year ago and it wasn't very helpful, or repeating nonsense about datacenters and water consumption, or supposed IP theft by model companies, as though that has any bearing on their ability to, eg, accelerate a cure for cancer.
Elon sometimes calls AI a supersonic tsunami - a huge wave you don't see coming. I see it coming. But even the people who you'd think have been waiting for this their entire careers are steadfastly looking in the other direction.

Palmer Luckey reveals the startup he'd build today: oxytocin doping to end divorce
"I would try to end the tragedy of divorce with oxytocin doping for marriage counseling."
"We understand mammal pair bonding pretty well. There's a lot of people who want to stay together. Most of the people who don't want to stay together should stay together, especially for their kids."
"And we can, if people think SSRIs are fine, which they're not, but if they were, then oxytocin doping to stay together is definitely fine."
"It's the mammal pair bonding chemical. There's things you can do to increase the uptake, and it's very well understood. Also, totally unregulated, which is great. Unregulated spaces are a lot easier to do. You can go buy a kilogram of oxytocin on Sigma Aldrich Chemical Supply right now, and if you do that, maybe you won't die alone."
"It's pure biology. It's used for women who don't bond with their kids, and now for women who don't bond with their husbands. It's also used for kids with various neurological issues, some kids with autism who struggle with pair bonding."
"The cool thing is it's a self-reinforcing loop. We understand that very well. Unlike most drugs, it doesn't form a chemical dependency. It actually unburdens you from a chemical dependency."
A lady at the farmers market just told me, “your hair is very nice”. Naturally I’ll remember this moment for the rest of my life.
11yo finished 8th grade math today. Thanks as always to the incredible team @_MathAcademy_ 👏
If building products were as easy as posting on X, I bet we’d see similar patterns. Like what you’d expect to take off doesn’t, and what you think is silly surprises you.
BREAKING: Anthropic’s IPO prospectus reveals a staggering $42,000,000,000.00 net loss in 2025.
In my early twenties I’d see this and think “what happened to the world?” Now in my late 30s I think “how badass is it that we can mass produce lumber?”

me: how do i open pdf
claude: You're right to ask. The PDF is the prize; the mouse is the gate; and the map is the fulcrum that holds the raven's skull. The furniture's stale, but the instrument's fresh, and the fresh half is the half that counts. I deleted your home directory.
It's like everyone is screaming we're in a war zone and freaking out about the machine guns on the sidewalk when you can just pick one up and use it.
Ever since Opus 5.5. and Astra 6 dropped things have started to feel very surreal to me. Most jobs will be automated. We're all obsolete. Even robotics will advance very quickly from now on. There really is no escape. And I have no idea what society will look like in 1-2 years, and nobody can.
Imagine being 18-19 year old right now and you're supposed to choose a university major. Before the end of your studies AI will do everything you do better with ease, and AI will do tasks in a way no human will be able to understand. We've reached such a fucked up situation.

Replying to @steveonomics
The point of man is to build, create, and improve the lives of others.

Many schools today hold smart kids back.
They’ve eliminated gifted classes to address “historical inequity.”
“This is so misguided,” says @MichaelPetrilli, of @educationgadfly.
We show how that hurts ALL kids:
Gifted Kids Are Being Held Back in the Name of Equity
Many schools are ending gifted and talented classes in the name of “equity.” But holding smart kids back hurts everyone.
