Kiwi chicks first night out, still a little unsteady but this was filmed a week ago. Dad hatched 2 chicks 2 weeks apart and dad is still fussing over the younger one. This is on my neighbours place.

At least once I month I remember my visual field is finite but feels edgeless. This is both insane and a completely unremarkable fact of experience.

Downtown #Pittsburgh sure looked eerie this morning as fog rolled down the rivers. For a few hours the Allegheny River was almost completely clear before the really heavy fog came in, which made for some amazing scenes from Mt. Washington

Every single surviving Black Robin is a descendant of Old Blue, she should be a household name 🥲
Once the world's rarest bird—down to a single breeding pair in 1980—now winner of NZ Bird of the Year. The black robin, saved from extinction by an extraordinary conservation effort, now has around 350 adult birds—still vulnerable, but with hope for the future. 1/2

103 million birds crossed Wisconsin last night. This is what that looks like on radar. Those rings are not rain. They are birds, lifting off after dark and peaking just before midnight. Tonight the wave moves east. 270 million on the move, the heaviest over Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and western New York. Lights out dusk to dawn. Lights pull them off course.

your relationship with yourself cannot be built entirely around improvement. at some point, you have to become someone you are allowed to enjoy being. you get to be proud of who you are. present tense

the boat-billed heron is adorable with his great grin but he also has the appearance of someone who can speak a sequence of words that will make me permanently insane

i suppose plenty know the 'knees' of birds are actually ankles what you may not know, is their real knees have axial rotation like your hips, because the tibia (shin bone) was shrunken to a needle shaped splinter that rotates around the fibula (calf bone) which acts as its hinge
Replying to @armanafzadeh
This motion is most obvious when the whole shank is spinning axially relative to the thigh-bone, a motion called knee long-axis rotation (LAR). Birds (unlike us) are capable of extreme knee LAR of over 100 degrees (...ouch), which they use to twist and turn around the ground.
