Imagine owing so much money that you’re drowning. Then somebody comes and helps you clear a huge part of the debt. You finally get room to breathe.
What do you do next?
START BORROWING AGAIN. 😭
That is Ghana.
In 2005, Ghana’s government debt was about 78% of everything the country produced in a year.
After major debt relief, it dropped to about 42% in 2006.
We were given a second chance.
By 2008, the IMF was already warning that Ghana’s debt was rising again.
Fast-forward to 2022.
We had borrowed so much again that Ghana could no longer manage the debt and had to ask the people we owed to change how and when we would pay them.
Think about how painful that is. A generation helped clear the bill. We ran up another one.
Today NPP and NDC supporters are still fighting over who managed the borrowing better.
