I think the physicist who speaks of God as a mathematician is almost indistinguishable from the Bronze Age artisan who was most able to visualise God as a worker in clay.

Watch this it’s fascinating - I asked James Timpson what he’d do about prisons and sentencing if he was in charge. He believes only a third of prisoners in jail should definitely be there. He’s now in charge of prisons (but not sentencing).

One of the coolest papers I've been involved in! What can thermal and affective technologies learn from Chinese classical poetry? Quite a bit!
🧵 preprint of my #DIS2024 paper w/ @__stillpoint & @elisamekler osf.io/7mb4c Smiles Summon the Warmth of Spring: A Framework for Thermal & Affective Design Grounded in Classical Chinese Poetry A v meaningful project for me! I'm excited to share!

No one will remember my v niche tweet about reading translation studies papers for fun --- but @Feng58486062 had this really cool idea: Why not develop design theory via translating Chinese Cí poetry? Check our #DIS2024 pre-print below 👇

70,000 people trapped in a desert by extreme rain, running out of food, with rumors of disease spreading, and porta-johns overflowing - but determined to keep the party going, is such a great metaphor for our civilization right now. climatecrocks.com/2023/09/02…

New article out in @PNASNews. In this letter, @dimkontogiorgos and I attempt replication of a PNAS paper from earlier this year: an estimation of replication rates from psychology papers using ML/NLP, by Youyou et al. We were partially able to replicate the authors’ findings.

We re-framed Rembrandts Anna and the Blind Tobit this week. We replaced the re-gilded French 18th century frame with 20th century gilded slip with an un-cut Dutch 17th century ebonised pearwood frame. Suddenly the light shines out of the window inside the painting

I find this conversation deeply strange, but the fault likes with scientists who keep repeating the nonsense that perception is a 'hallucination'. A more neutral word would be 'construction'. And most of the time our constructions are pretty accurate. lithub.com/how-exactly-does-…

"The error of reductionism as a general point of view is that it supposes the higher-dimensional object is somehow “composed” of its lower-dimensional projections, which have ontological primacy and which exist in isolation, the “natural” parts of which the whole is composed."

Yeah, about Meta's Segment Anything Model (SAM)? It doesn't quite work as expected.
These statements appear to be unaware of the current paradigm of self-supervised learning. Models can and do recognize previously unseen patterns in the world. This is exactly what makes language models so popular. More directly addressing your point: ai.facebook.com/research/pub…
