Have just spent 30 minutes trying to set a PIN for Bank of Ireland's online banking thing. Pretty sharp reminder of why I stopped banking with them N years ago.

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

I am amazed by the “Twitter will collapse without any engineers” discussion. It reminds me of ayn rand’s galt - we withdraw our work and society collapses, or the Russian railway workers in 1917, refusing to carry troops to Petrograd.

Watching the discussion around Twitter continuing to work, I am reminded of the importance of making a provable prediction.

The screenshot here is alarmingly familiar.
Tech Debt is one of those things that make sense to engineering, but to leadership it sounds like “we’ve created a mess over the years that slowed the product, we did nothing to fix it, and now we need to spend *even more* time and people on fixing it”. Not a winning argument.

Fwiw, I can totally believe that musk is correct. A team I was on hired a very smart guy to rewrite a system. The smart guy spent a few days reading the code, poking the profiler, and delivered a five line change that was enough of a performance win to cancel the rewrite.

More likely here is that musk is repeating something that has gone through many layers, each of which has added bullshit.

I don’t know if I would agree, but “launch a dumb thing quickly” is also a serious risk.

This could be incredible. One of the early books is this without the fraud.
Michael Lewis' next book is about Sam Bankman-Fried. Email from CAA confirms he has been embedded with him for last 6 months; note below was first sent to potential buyers for filmed rights. Scoop @TheAnkler theankler.com/p/hwood-ftx-fr…

when I first moved to ireland one thing that amazed me was dealing with UK institutions that were shaky on the idea of other countries existing. I have now encounted the Irish version - the assumption that everyone has a PPS number.

Watching Liz Truss at the cenotaph and it occurs she’s got like 50 years ahead of her attending state events as Former Prime Minister, a permanent reminder of the thing where she blew up her one shot at the top in 50 days flat. It’s like some kind of punishment from a Greek myth
