Building Better Coding Agent Harnesses
at @LangChain we're thinking hard about the science of harness engineering + open research on what works & doesn't
A quick peak on our deepagents X Terminal Bench 2.0 work, shoutout to @alexgshaw & Harbor (they're great). Broad research goals:
1. Find general purpose agent improvement recipes
2. Measure which design changes most affect model performance and how
3. Measure if/how models are non-fungible in their harness
Some previews on what worked well:
- Self-Verification & Iteration as first class citizens. Models are very good at self correction if they get a feedback signal, but they often won't participate in this loop. So designing prompts & deterministic hooks to force them into this helps a lot.
- Automated Context Engineering: Pre-fetching some environment context up front avoids discovery errors for tools/files.
- Large scale reflection over Traces is a powerful general recipe for stratifying errors + validating proposed improvements
We'll be releasing a blog and research artifacts soon on all of this! Will return to measure more vectors of harness design + use codex-5.3
If you're interested in effective harness engineering and building great coding agents, would love to hear from you

We surveyed 1,300+ developers and business leaders to understand how AI agents are actually being built, tested, and shipped to real users.
What are the most popular agent use cases? Biggest challenges when building agents? And who's really using observability or evals tooling?

Here's 6 key insights below 🧵👇
An agent for your agents 🔄
Today, we’re shipping new ways to observe, analyze, and debug agents with LangSmith:
• Polly: an AI assistant for AI engineering that helps you understand traces, threads, and improve prompts
• LangSmith Fetch: a CLI for pulling trace & thread data straight into your terminal or coding agent
Agents are running longer and getting more complex, which demands new debugging workflows beyond simple LLM apps. We wrote a blog on the trends behind this shift— and why tools like Polly and LangSmith Fetch are needed. Shipping reliable agents requires full visibility into agent behavior, with tooling that helps you reason over that data in the UI, the terminal, or alongside coding agents.

Saw @arafatkatze's brilliant thread on the 3-state agent pattern and took it as a challenge! 🚀
Built it with LangChain v1 alpha's new middleware concept - turns out this elegant pattern maps perfectly to middleware's lifecycle hooks.
The simplicity is beautiful. 🧵👇
Here's the simplest explanation of @cline's agentic algorithm.
It's just a state machine that classifies every request with a tool call into 3 types:
1. Question tools (need clarification)
2. Action tools (gather context)
3. Completion tools (present results)
That's it.

🚀 Excited to share my first big contribution since joining @LangChain a month ago!
We’re introducing Middleware in LangChain 1.0 — a new agent abstraction that finally gives developers full control over context engineering.
Flexible. Composable. Adaptable — supports implementing different agent anthropologies like reflection, swarms, supervisors, and more
It's in alpha but go try it out, I would love your feedback 😊

🚀Agent Middleware
The core agent loop is dead simple - but there are lots of small variants to state management or steps that you may want to tweak
Middleware lets you do that! New in LangChain 1.0alpha

‼️LangChain & LangGraph 1.0alpha releases
Today we are announcing alpha releases of v1.0 for langgraph and langchain, in both Python and JS.
🕸️LangGraph is a low-level agent orchestration framework, giving developers durable execution and fine-grained control to run complex agentic systems in production.
🦜LangChain helps developers ship AI features fast with standardized model abstractions and prebuilt agent patterns, making it easy to build complex applications without vendor lock-in.
We are working towards an official 1.0 release in late October - please give us any feedback!
TL,DR:
1. LangGraph is largely the same as before, no breaking changes. We’ve heard good feedback about LangGraph and are excited to move to 1.0
2. New standard content blocks on messages in LangChain Core. Message formats are evolving, and so is LangChain. Backwards compatible
3. LangChain itself - high level agents and chains - is greatly changed. You should think of LangChain 1.0 as a new package - focused around a central agent abstraction, built on top of LangGraph
4. New docs site!
You can find a discussion topic here: forum.langchain.com/t/langch…
Please give us feedback!
