They called him a threat , but history still call his name General Mamman Vatsa Major General Mamman Jiya Vatsa (3 December 1940 – 5 March 1986) was a senior Nigerian military officer, poet, and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, who was executed over allegations of involvement in a coup attempt in 1986. His execution became particularly controversial because he was a childhood friend of the then military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, making the incident one of the most contentious episodes in Nigerian history. Early Life and Military Career Birth and Education Research indicates that the late General Mamman Vatsa was born on Tuesday, 3 December 1940, in Bida, Niger State. Vatsa and Ibrahim Babangida attended Government College, Bida, together. Beginning of His Military Career He joined the Nigerian Army on 10 December 1962 and received military training at institutions both in Nigeria and India. Role in the Nigerian Civil War Vatsa commanded the 21st Battalion during the Nigerian Civil War and wrote several articles discussing the conduct of some military operations. Role in the Coup That Overthrew Ironsi’s Government Vatsa, who was then a lieutenant serving with the 4th Battalion in Ibadan, was among the Northern Nigerian officers who organised the coup of 28 July 1966, led by Lieutenant Colonel Murtala Muhammed and Theophilus Danjuma. Other officers who played roles in the coup included Lieutenant Sani Abacha, Lieutenant Muhammadu Buhari, Lieutenant Ibrahim Babangida, Lieutenant Ibrahim Bako, and Lieutenant Buka Suka Dimka, among others. The coup resulted in the deaths of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, and Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, who was hosting Ironsi in Ibadan. Following the overthrow of Ironsi’s government, Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon was appointed Head of State. Military Appointments In 1970, Vatsa served as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy before being appointed to a senior staff position at Army Headquarters. He subsequently served as: Commander of the 30th Brigade in Ogoja until July 1975. Commander of the 13th Infantry Brigade in Calabar until February 1976. Commander of the Brigade of Guards until 1979. Towards the end of President Shehu Shagari’s administration, Vatsa became the Quartermaster-General (QMG), a position he held until the December 1983 coup. In 1981, when Cameroonian soldiers shot and killed five Nigerian soldiers in the disputed Bakassi area, Vatsa led efforts to secure Nigeria’s borders. He eventually attained the rank of Major General in the Nigerian Army. Minister of Abuja From 1984 to 1985, Vatsa served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, under the military administration of Ibrahim Babangida. Writing and Literary Contributions Beyond his military career, Vatsa was a distinguished writer and poet. He published several poetry collections, particularly works intended for children. Support for Writers He helped establish the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and supported the provision of a building that would serve as a centre for writers. Because of his passion for literature, he became known as the “Poet-General.” Coup Allegations and Execution In December 1985, Vatsa and several military officers were arrested over allegations that they had plotted a coup to overthrow Babangida’s government. Trial He was tried before a special military tribunal and found guilty, despite claims that there was insufficient compelling evidence against him. Execution Vatsa and other officers were executed on 5 March 1986. The incident generated considerable controversy, particularly because of his longstanding friendship with Babangida. The officers executed alongside him included:

Pictures of Yazidi women, Followers of the Yazidi Religion. The Yazidis are an ancient ethnoreligious community originating primarily from northern Iraq, particularly Sinjar and the Lalish Valley, with historical communities in Syria, Turkey, and the Caucasus. They speak Kurmanji, a northern Kurdish dialect, and practise Yazidism, a distinct monotheistic religion centred on belief in one supreme God and seven holy angelic beings, led by Tawûsî Melek, known as the Peacock Angel. Lalish, located in northern Iraq, is the holiest site in the Yazidi religion. It is an important centre of pilgrimage and contains sacred shrines associated with Sheikh Adi, a significant figure in Yazidi religious history. Yazidi culture is rich in traditional clothing, music, dance, oral storytelling, and religious ceremonies. Their distinctive cultural and religious identity has been preserved through generations, with strong emphasis on family, community, and religious heritage.

Biographies of Famous Islamic Scholars… Ibn Khallikan: An Islamic Historian and Author of the Biographical Dictionary Wafayat al-A’yan. He was born on the 11th of Rabi’ al-Thani, 608 AH. Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Bakr ibn Khallikān (Arabic: أحمد بن محمد بن إبراهيم بن أبي بكر ابن خلكان) was a historian who compiled a biographical dictionary of prominent Muslim scholars and notable figures titled Wafayāt al-A‘yān wa-Anbā’ Abnā’ al-Zamān (وفيات الأعيان وأنباء أبناء الزمان). Because of this achievement, he is regarded as one of the most distinguished biographical writers in Islamic history. Throughout Islamic history, many individuals have become renowned because of their remarkable influence and achievements. Ibn Khallikan, a prominent Kurdish historian, distinguished himself through his writings, which had a lasting impact on the understanding of Islamic culture. Ibn Khallikan, also known as Shams al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad Ibn Khallikan al-Sa‘i, was born on 22 September 1211 CE, corresponding to 11 Rabi’ al-Thani, 608 AH, in Erbil, which is now the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He was born during the Ayyubid dynasty. His Kurdish heritage significantly influenced his perspective and approach to historical writing, giving him a distinctive way of interpreting the events and individuals of his time. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong curiosity, deep intellectual interest, and a passion for learning. His pursuit of knowledge led him to explore various fields of study, including literature, philosophy, and history. He began his early education at home in Erbil, where his initial studies laid the foundation for his future academic achievements. At the age of 18, he began studying at major educational institutions, immersing himself in the writings of prominent scholars and philosophers of his time. Throughout his education, he studied various disciplines, including religion, philosophy, languages, and the sciences. His early studies took him from Erbil to Aleppo and Damascus before he pursued Islamic jurisprudence in Mosul and later in Cairo, where he settled. He gained recognition as a jurist, theologian, and grammarian. An early biographer described him as “a God-fearing, virtuous, and learned man who loved wisdom in conversation and teaching.” Ibn Khallikan’s most celebrated work, Wafayāt al-A‘yān wa-Anbā’ Abnā’ al-Zamān (The Obituaries of Eminent Men), stands as evidence of his thorough research and profound understanding of the prominent individuals who helped shape Islamic history. He married in 1252 and served as a deputy chief judge in Egypt until 1261, when he was appointed chief judge of Damascus. He lost this position in 1271 and returned to Egypt, where he taught until he was reappointed as a judge in Damascus in 1278, during Rajab 681 AH.
