The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the most peaceful and human empire in the history of mankind.
No colonies. No transatlantic slave trade. No Inquisition. While Spain burned people alive and Britain shipped Africans across the ocean, the Commonwealth gave religious freedom to Jews, Protestants, and Orthodox Christians when the rest of Europe was drowning in blood.
The Warsaw Confederation of fifteen seventy-three was the first law in European history guaranteeing freedom of conscience.
It elected its kings. It had the largest parliament on the continent.
It was the first to abolish capital punishment for witchcraft in sixteen forty-eight โ a century before most of Europe.
And unlike every other empire, it never fought a war of aggression. No invasions for conquest. Every conflict it entered was defensive.
It also developed Ukraine and Belarus economically โ turned the wild steppe into farmland, built cities, trade routes, and institutions where before there was nothing but frontier.
It wasn't perfect. Nothing human is. But compared to every empire that came before or after, it was the closest thing mankind has ever built to a civilization that chose tolerance over terror.

Bioware has been a massive part of CDPR history. We befriended them when localizing and selling Baldurโs Gate games in Poland, Czech, and Slovakia. And later they were great help when lending us their engine for Witcher 1, sharing their wisdom and even giving us a spot at their booth at E3. I had a pleasure to visit them a few times in Edmonton and also host them in our Warsaw office. Very sad for the people affected, but also sad to see a legendary brand go down. Not a great day in the games industry.

Playing The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone in English, it's easy to miss how much Polish and Lithuanian history sits inside the von Everec family. The names give it away once you know the Polish forms.
First of all its the look. The moustache, shaved sides, rich robe, broad sash and curved sword all point to the szlachta of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Olgierd is the Polish form of Algirdas, Grand Duke of Lithuania.
His brother Vlodimir is Witold in Polish, which is Vytautas. Their grandfather Kestatis is Kiejstut in Polish, which is Kฤstutis.
That is a full set of names from the Gediminid dynasty.
Iris has her own Samogitian link. Her maiden name, Bilewitz, echoes Oleลka Billewiczรณwna, the heroine of Sienkiewicz's The Deluge. The Billewicz family (Bileviฤiai in Lithuanian) was a real Samogitian noble house with estates around Raseiniai, Viduklฤ and Rietavas.
Olgierd himself resembles Oleลka's love interest, Andrzej Kmicic: a charismatic nobleman, deadly with a sabre, surrounded by dangerous men, and willing to wreck what he loves. His duel with Geralt even borrows lines from the duel in the 1974 film of The Deluge, such as "You do not strike, sir! You flail" and "Would you wait, sir, for the dribble to subside?".
