A digital work does not exist in the way a painting exists.
It is not present by default.
It does not persist perceptually on its own.
It must be executed.
On the Executable Work — 2026

Tree 1 is now live on networked.art
Made on August 25, 2026, 29 days after Surfacing began, it records the state of the network at a particular moment.
Identity works form the shared trunk. Collected works lift out of it. Branches appear where participation has produced another work.
Tree 1, by the numbers:
9 Identities
3 Fields
10 unique participants
3 active branches
29 days of Surfacing
A small network, but enough activity for its structure to start becoming visible.

Grateful to @guiletwa for collecting Identity 7: Nicolas Sassoon’s glyph, relaxed.
Another small shift in the Surfacing network, and a meaningful one.
Thank you, Guile. 🌴
Identity 7: @Nicolas_Sassoon 's glyph, relaxed. is now at auction after a generous $25 offer from @guiletwa.
Another nice network effect: one Identity creating renewed attention around another.
Thank you, Guile. 🌴
Grateful to have won the auction for @seanbonner 's KYP on Friday.

I wrote a bit more about why I appreciate the work and chose to collect it, and @stephensantoro_ 's artforum.fun felt like an especially appropriate place to share those thoughts.

Grateful to Stephen for collecting Identity 9: Stephen’s glyph, relaxed.
A fitting home for this one. Thank you, @stephensantoro_. 🌴
Sold for $25 to @stephensantoro_.
Surfacing is starting to become visible as a tree.
The trunk holds the Identities.
Collected works lift out of it.
Branches appear when participation produces another work.
So far the network is still sparse, which is part of the point. Surfacing uses networked.art’s own activity as material, asking where participation stops and where it begins producing new form.
At the moment, @stephensantoro_ occupies both the top and bottom node: he first entered my network by collecting Identity (0): My glyph, relaxed., and now appears again as Identity 9: Stephen’s glyph, relaxed.
Just under 2 hours remain in the auction.
What happens next determines whether this stays a node or becomes the condition for another branch.
Grateful for the ongoing work of @jackbutcher, @jalilwahdat, and @yougogirl_eth as they continue developing networked.art.
I’m especially happy to be using the new custom collections feature, with Identity and Field works now separated into their own collection buckets.

Someone go collect my glyph! What a beautiful artwork! Thank you Tyson!
A portrait of participation
Stephen’s presence in Surfacing has shaped how I think about what participation can become.
Identity 9: Stephen’s glyph, relaxed. is my response to that.
Not a reward. Not a record of status.
A recognition of consequence.
