My single-authored paper "Algorithmic and Human Collusion" has been accepted for publication at the Economic Journal. More than happy about this outcome and the process of getting there. I won't summarize the paper yet again on here, but a small anecdote about the paper🧵

I had been holding off on posting my thoughts until the interview was released. Director Iñárritu’s “DIGGER” is a film that all of us living in today’s world should see. It is a work that remains with the audience, provoking reflection and sounding alarms. As you absorb this film and carry it with you, a “tool (a digger)” for delving deeper into the future will surely begin to take shape within you. This is a film that will stay by your side for years to come.

Algorithm providers often try to influence the sellers using their tools by: A) warning them about price wars and giving advice on how to avoid them, B) providing defaults like price-matching or "oscillation" strategies, or C) providing advice from an LLM chatbot 🧵
NEW PAPER: Does the design of pricing tools change market prices? 🤖📈 In our experiment, nearly all design nudges raised prices and changed the type of algorithms, strongest effect: adapt a pre-defined algo with one click. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2609.26861 @_ToFeWe @hans_normann

Our results suggest that such communication can increase prices and thereby worsen consumer outcomes. We argue that this deserves more regulatory attention.

Interestingly, when we run the same exercise with LLMs choosing the pricing algorithms, they are even more collusive than humans when left to design the algorithms themselves. Greater automation could lead to even worse outcomes. More details in Adrian's post.

Interesting how the EEA decided to promote their sustainability survey.

On my way to Dublin for the EEA meeting! Hope to meet many of you. Quick side note: Imagine the rail line between Galway and Dublin with double tracks and reliable mobile coverage through the Midlands: paradise!

Those checks are def super helpful but odd for journals to rely on a private firm that also then sells the service to authors. Will this create an incentive to buy Refine before submission? I guess open-source alternatives would be the better option
We’re proud to announce that Refine has signed partnerships with two leading publishers in economics. Both the American Economic Association and the Econometric Society now use Refine’s AI-assisted technical verification as part of their publication processes. 1/

On vacation, playing Mensch ärgere Dich nicht (Don't Get Angry) with my Russian wife. She doesn't know the rules. Says it's not popular at all in Russia. Me, surprised: "What games do kids play in Russia?" Her: "Chess." Mic drop
