This is why Britain eventually has to confront the obvious. You cannot solve a structural growth crisis with an endless cycle of tax rises and spending restraint while deliberately keeping barriers between yourself and your largest market. The OBR still estimates Brexit leaves UK productivity around 4% lower in the long run. British goods exports have badly underperformed our competitors since the TCA came into force. So yes, fix planning. Fix energy. Invest in infrastructure. Support industry and farming. But the biggest structural growth reform sitting in front of Britain is the one Westminster still struggles to say out loud: 📢 reintegrate with Europe. Single Market. Customs Union. And ultimately, if Britain wants its full influence back, EU membership. You cannot budget your way around geography.

I find it amazing that the UK, an island off mainland europe, managed to build up car manufacturing to the point where it rivalled Germany in 2016. That was pretty good going for the UK. Then the Brexit vote hit and killed it.
The decline of the British car industry came in two Brexit stages. 1. Uncertainty post-referendum weakened the industry 2. Trade arrangements that replaced EU membership did lasting damage. ukandeu.ac.uk/from-pace-sett…

Needs locking up. Murderous, lying bastard.
This man and his lackey Hancock have been found guilty of killing thousands of older people living in care homes and lying to the public time and again. They should be arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned posthaste.

If Jewish pupils are feeling upset when they see a Palestinian badge, the correct response is not to erase Palestine from schools--it's to educate those kids that a genocide is taking place and the correct moral position is to oppose it. Anything less is a dereliction of duty.

The collapse in violent crime over three decades has been one of the most striking developments of my lifetime. News is about what’s going wrong, and rightly so. But the bigger picture also matters From today’s figures:-

Former bricklayer here. Most working class people (like most middle-class people) are disgusted by the comments coming from Reform UK figures caught on camera by ITV. Bigoted privately educated multimillionaire far-right wanker Nigel Farage doesn't give a solitary shit about working class people. Nor does bigoted privately educated multimillionaire far-right wanker Rupert Lowe.

Posh-boy millionaire Nigel Farage’s latest excuse is that most working-class men are racist and misogynistic, sniff women’s chairs, would sexually assault female colleagues and make disgusting remarks about their own daughters, such as: “Fuck me, if she was my daughter, it would still be bath night on a Thursday. I’ll wash you properly this time.” The white working-class friends I grew up with, from primary and secondary school to college and university, are not nonces or bigots. Farage doesn’t get to smear an entire class of people to excuse the disgusting behaviour of Reform councillors and activists.

"I don't know what the fuss is about. Zionism is of course racist. .... Zionists ... decided to establish their self-determination on the territory of another people. .... There's no way that the state of Israel could have been established without the expulsion of the people already living in the territory ... Why is this so difficult to understand?" The indomitable Ghada Karmi, driven from Jerusalem as a child, cuts through the crap at this morning's Greens4Palestine press conference. /1

We have become so used to functioning markets that we confuse money with security. I learnt the difference during the tsunami in the Maldives. While we waited to be evacuated, some British tourists had gathered their passports, cigarettes and money. I had water, food and torch/lifejacket. In a crisis, the value hierarchy changes very quickly. The same is true of nations. GDP, trade deals and financial assets matter but if you cannot reliably secure food, energy, water and essential supplies, you are not resilient. You cannot eat sovereignty. You cannot heat a home with a trade slogan. Real national security starts with the things people physically need to survive.

A woman has alleged Russell Brand told her “it’s just fun” as he raped her in a hotel room at the 1999 Labour party conference, a court has heard. The alleged victim told detectives the comedian made her feel sick and dirty as he assaulted her despite her pleading: “Get off me, please stop. It hurts.” Brand faces three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault against six women, in allegations spanning 10 years from 1999 to 2009. He denies all the charges and has pleaded not guilty. The 51-year-old fixed his gaze on one of the TV screens at Southwark crown court on Thursday as a video of the woman’s interview from 27 September 2023 was played. She told police she met Brand at a fringe cabaret event that he was performing in during the Labour party conference in Bournemouth in 1999. She was not attracted to the then unknown performer, whom she assumed was gay and showered her with compliments. But she found him polite and intelligent, and the pair spoke about their work before going back to her hotel room to continue their conversation. The woman said she “froze” in the run-down single room when she returned from the toilet to find that Brand was partly naked and “prancing around” like an ostrich. He also asked her to take photographs of him. She said she asked him why he had undressed, and he told her: “Don’t worry, I’m mostly naked at home.” She told police he then raped her in an attack that lasted up to 10 minutes and left her feeling frightened, in pain, and like she couldn’t breathe. “He did rape, he did push me on the bed,” she told police. “He did pull my clothes off, he took my trousers off. “I remember him on me, very heavy. I know I said no. I kind of drifted out of my head. I couldn’t get out of the situation – ‘do I shout, do I scream?’ He was very heavy, I couldn’t breathe, it didn’t take long.” She described his body as snake-like and “disgusting” and said his tongue was “horrible” like a lizard. “I’m saying ‘no, no’ but I was really scared. I know he groped me. I know he was touching me, I know he grabbed my breasts. I know he tried to kiss me and I moved my neck. I didn’t want his mouth on mine,” she told police. “He was just pulling my trousers down and pulling my underwear off, and he was inside me. It was not nice, it was painful and it hurt.” She said she closed her eyes during the attack and hoped it would be over quickly. She recalled: “He was making noises, a lot of noises of enjoyment and saying how pretty I was. I remember him complimenting me, saying: ‘Are you enjoying it’? I remember him asking me. Obviously I didn’t answer.” She alleged that Brand spoke as the attack was unfolding. She told police: “He was just saying: ‘We’re having fun, it’s fine, it’s all good, don’t worry about it, it’s just fun, it’s normal.’” The woman, who had been a victim of abuse in the past, said Brand made her compare earlier experiences, and it “stuck in her head … is this what abusers do?” She told police: “It was almost like to convince me it’s all OK and that I’d enjoy it, that I’d have to learn to enjoy it.” In the aftermath, she said Brand acted “like nothing was wrong”, wrote down his email address, and suggested that his mother might like to meet her. The following morning, she banged her head against the wall because she felt numb. She told police she had had nightmares about being pregnant and said she kept quiet about the incident for years as she watched Brand becoming “more and more famous”. The woman said a 2023 Dispatches documentary about allegation of sexual misconduct by Brand “triggered” her to go to police. Brand denies the allegations. The trial continues. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Apparently Sally Rooney is Antisemitic because she opposes genocide. People in Ireland are Antisemitic because they oppose genocide. This is why Andy Burnhams comments yesterday were so deeply irresponsible - blurring all the lines between being Jewish & criticising Israel.
Boulton "she, in common with a lot of people in Ireland is taking a very strong pro Palestine & I have to say anti Israel & anti Jewish stance" Adam, can you provide evidence that Sally Rooney is taking an anti Jewish stance? Or are you in fact lying to smear critics of Israel?

I have been a Jew for 91 yeqrs, a Green Party activist for 26. The Green Party is not anti-semitic. We are anti-Israel government because they have murdered thousands of children and are killing and destroying homes in the West Bak. We must do all we can to stop them.
The worst antisemitism I have seen recently are the vile attacks on Zack Labour must be terrified

I was walking to the building where I work in Oxford when I passed three young girls speaking Farsi and I couldn’t help but run back and ask if they were from Afghanistan. They said yes. It had been a few months since their arrival as refugees waiting in Pakistan, now studying at a local school in Oxford. I was swelling with emotion. These girls just escaped 5 years of gender persecution under the Taliban. Erasure of their schools. And are now in Oxford, studying freely. Thank you to the U.K government for giving them a second chance. As a former refugee myself, we all just need one chance, as Canada gave to my mother and I. Two sets of Afghan women, escaping two Taliban regimes, meeting in Oxford. All in the hopes of finding freedom through education.
