What these times are requiring of us however, is something different: to be curious about the relationships between things, and to look at the whole.

This is the paradigm that values the mind and intellect above all else, and singles out and separates information.

While there’ll always be a need for those who narrow their focus and specialise in a particular area of expertise, the pedestal we’ve put ‘experts’ on has come from an outdated paradigm.

These were the words I heard some months ago, spoken by the rabble-rouser that is Jane Hardwicke Collings and they’ve been lingering in me ever since.

The cult of the expert is over.

I’m not saying there’s nothing noble about trying to thrive in this world, but I’m speaking to the sense of personal failing when we’re not. It’s ok. It’s fucking hard being in this world.

Often the message between the lines is that if you struggle with these things: don’t be a victim, just empower yourself a little more, look at your privilege, find the right coach, invest in yourself.

Would it also not be ok for black people to have events only for black people?
