New episode with Yasmin Pacella out now!
Tune in to hear Yasmin's journey from Tehran's theater scene, to getting a PhD at The University of Miami, to working on her own neo-noir short film.

From my recent guest article in @Sundial_CU.
The only way for CODA to get on the right track is for more courageous, more principled students to take the lead.

ICYMI, Clayton Smith — former @Sundial_CU senior editor and founder of the Columbia Open Discourse Alliance — on the sad evolution of his brainchild. It’s now an organization that condemns, ehem, yours truly, for perpetuating “rape culture.”

How can America develop a healthier sexual culture? Do you think Nikos is on the right track?

And CODA was *supposed to be* the organization that facilitated those debates.
College is *supposed to be* a place where students debate controversial topics.

Awesome to have Clay back in our pages.
On how the Columbia “Open Discourse” Alliance, which he founded, has betrayed its mission in condemning me and @Christina_ma4’s recent @Sundial_CU essay on the “Cornell 7” for “promot[ing] rape culture” & “work[ing] to silence survivors.”
My friends at @Sundial_CU invited me to write a guest essay about how The Columbia Open Discourse Alliance (CODA) has fallen well short of it's founding principles. (I should know, I founded it!).

For many people, when they say “believe women” they mean “take everything women say on the subject of SA as gospel truth or we will crush your nuts with a brick”

I really hope to see more young men stand up for what they believe in.
It’s a mark of true masculinity to remain steadfast in one’s convictions. We must lead by example!
I have the utmost respect for @Nikos_Mohammadi for doing this with me.
"A lot of very left-leaning young women date very right-wing guys. I think its that... confidence and that conviction in their beliefs that makes a man masculine and attractive."

I Founded CODA. It Has Betrayed Its Mission.
Former Sundial staff editor Clayton Smith returns to argue that the Columbia Open Discourse Alliance, which he founded, has abdicated its mission in condemning a recent Sundial essay on the “Cornell Seven.”

Do you go around demanding every single business in your town spell out how they benefit the community? Data centers spend money, employ people, and pay taxes (lots of taxes) just like any other business. Data center startups should be applauded, not relentlessly interrogated.
I read the article twice and still don't understand what the benefit is for the community.

I did not include this in the article, but I highly recommend reading @shoshanaaufzien's response to this controversy over @Christina_ma4 and @Nikos_Mohammadi's 'Cornell 7' piece

The data center backlash is not really about resources. It is about fear of AI and fear of the unknown. I spent four days in rural Colorado shadowing a data center startup's 'listening tour.' This story is about what ordinary Americans think about AI and their desire to have a stake in the boom.
David Meyer (@thedmeyer) is the founder of (@DeployStrata), which is trying to build a tiny 12-shipping container data center on a sand lot in the middle of nowhere. During a community meeting, he answered every practical question: Noise, water, power, cleanup. It didn't move the skeptics:
— “I’m willing to bet 90% of this group will raise their hands saying innately I’m against AI and I’m scared to death of AI. I don’t think any of us in this room have any clue how bad this could go.”
— Trump "wants to use China as the blueprint. Have we ever asked the Chinese what life is like over there? Digital ID. It sucks.”
— “Our collective concerns regarding AI, data centers and Flock cameras come down to one primary concern. I address these concerns in one statement: WE DO NOT WANT TO LIVE IN A SURVEILLANCE STATE!!!”
— “What do we need it for? That’s the big question.”
And above all else: what's in it for the community?
To be clear, the resources do matter. But they are often a front for these larger fears over technology, which this specific project exposes by solving all of the resource concerns.
