We were warned. Four months ago top Himalayan experts reported the rate of ice loss doubling since 2000, with glaciers shrinking by fifth since 1990. “This isn’t a distant problem”they said. “It’s happening in real time”. They predicted “catastrophe”. icimod.org/press-releases/hi…

New post: With climate change now visible all around us opponents of action are changing tack. Dismantling their new attacks helps identify a hidden structure in political argument that is often used to try and kill popular policies. (£/free trial) samf.substack.com/p/how-to-k…

OMG 😮 These Nepal flood videos are absolutely horrifying‼️ The death toll has now risen to over 160 people. Hundreds are still missing and feared dead. Including hundreds of tourists. At least 54 Americans are amongst the people who have been reported missing thus far.

Stamp duty is such a bad and damaging tax that raising pretty much any other tax in order to cut it would be beneficial. Yet ever since Gordon Brown started to do so, pretty much every chancellor has increased it. Rachel Reeves included. So depressing…
Replying to @JohnRentoul
Only thing I would add is that stamp duty is such a terrible tax that cutting it (as well as simplifying it) would be worth higher council tax or income tax – but you could only do that in good times

If my boys grow up to be like Jo and Kush from Race Across the World we will have done something right. They’re a brilliant antidote to Tate-style toxic masculinity: bright, kind, compassionate, emotionally intelligent, grounded, and culturally aware. PROPER role models for boys.

🇨🇳 China just switched on the world's largest offshore solar farm 2.3 million solar panels. 2,934 steel platforms. 11,736 piles driven into the ocean floor. Built to survive force-11 gales and sea ice. It sits 5 miles off the coast and powers 2.67 million people. Oh, and they're also farming fish underneath it 😳

Coming late to the party on this but @RachelReevesMP has announced plans for 'revenue assignment' for English mayoral authorities - letting local areas share in the risk and reward of growth in tax bases for more taxes, including income tax. My initial @theIFS thoughts... [1/6]
