Hi, I'm Dr. Nancy Yen Shipley, an orthopaedic surgeon in Portland.
I help people keep their joints healthy for the long haul, without rushing to surgery. Joint preservation, regenerative medicine, and care that treats the whole person, not just the painful joint.
You don't need to be a pro athlete to get pro-level care. Getting back to work, lifting your grandkid, your Saturday hike: whatever you want to do with your day is your pro sport.
I started in orthopaedics when only 6% of us were women. I've been doing it my way ever since.
I hate watching this clip every time, but the ATC (Brandee Barbee) sprinting and moving a player out of the way was the right thing to do. As a former football team doc I’ll stand by this every time.

Before you go telling people they can swat anyone away who “puts hands on them” please know what you’re talking about first.
Athletic Trainers have AUTHORITY to physically remove players from the area of an injured player.
She had every authority to push him out of the way.
First step…clear the perimeter
I think many don’t realize
1) how loud it is out there - there’s no “excuse me sir can you kindly step aside”
2) the urgency of the situation when condition is unknown
3) the NCAA officially grants "unchallengeable autonomous authority" to primary athletics healthcare providers including ATCs
The downed athlete is the priority and any non-medical staff are simply in the way.

Same insurance company, two patients, this week. I’ve never had an ACL recon denied before this. It’s so simple…knee unstable —-> make it stable.

"Studies show" is not proof.
Ask which study, who ran it, and whether anyone else could reproduce it
Had the rep of one of the most derided health plans falsify codes submitted for a surgery by my team - in order to deny the claim - only to have another rep tell us that’s what happened and that basically their colleague lied. My poor patient. This sucks. I’ll be not only filing a grievance with that plan, I’ll be filing this either my state insurance commission. This is straight up FRAUD.
I’ve been quiet here a while, but I’m still here. Since I was last really active, I opened my own solo practice. I’m an orthopaedic surgeon who asks questions before I reach for a scalpel, Portland, joint preservation over quick fixes. Late bloomer Gen X, loud about women’s bone and joint health, occasional karaoke rapper.
