I just rediscovered the unforgettable and went on one of my favorite hikes ever-the Balsam Nature Trail at Mt. Mitchell State Park. I have never been in an ecosystem quite like this. It’s a spruce-fir forest that only exists above 5,500 feet, apparently more like something you’d expect to see in Canada. It was wet and misty with ferns and mosses and very dense skinny trees, with the scent of balsam in the air. Heavenly!
