Shetland all done and dusted, and what an excellent three weeks it was!
Self-finds were hard to come by this year with GG Shrike, R-b Shrike, R-b Fly, Am Wigeon (joint find), Barreds, Quail & Turtle Dove.
Big thanks to @stevewilson1706 for all the driving and company. #Shetland
When on Shetland, I don’t tend to enjoy twitching days as it takes away valuable finding hours, but today was an exception. Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler was a belated world tick, so it was a must see bird, found by good friends Dave Cooper & Richard Fairbank y’day. #Shetland
Following swiftly on from the GGS, today I found a pristine Red-backed Shrike! This was soon followed by a joint find American Wigeon… a crazy few minutes! #Shetland
I still don’t understand how in over 25 years of birding, and having a coastal patch in SE England for most of that time, it’s taken until today to find my first shrike! This Great Grey flew in front of the vehicle and landed for long enough to admire at Bixter, #Shetland today.
After a moist day out in the field, decided on checking one final garden, and bingo! Three flycatcher species with Red-breasted, Pied & Spotted within yards of each other at South Collafirth, #Shetland.

Despite the SWs and few birds, Shetland is still a grand place to be. Digging out the odd common migrant up north and have found the only ‘in the field’ Yellow-browed Warbler this week to date 🤪. H’lights: W. Bonelli’s, Baird’s, King Eider, Am Black Tern, Lap Bunt, Citrine Wag!

Great Shearwaters are awesome birds, but what makes them even more epic is watching one from a far-flung cliff edge in NW Highland. I’d almost given up after 5 hours, but glad I stayed another hour!
Delighted to have an article in the most recently published Birding Asia magazine (No. 45), featuring our few days at the birding hotspots on Bohol, #Philippines!

My Highland yearlist reached 200 this morning, with a Sooty Shearwater passing a very wet Tarbat Ness. Only five Frog Orchids present in a very brief search.
Highland Yearlist: no heard only, and the boundary as per highland birds website.
August has got off to an absolute flyer! Very rare that I get a cetacean ✅ in UK waters, but this pod of four Northern Bottlenose Whales were seen off Cromarty this pm, having been found a few hours earlier.
Also ‘my’ female Honey-buzzard from earlier today! @InvCourier
It was worth the effort of driving up to Balnakeil y’day to walk around Faraid Head with @erichens11! The wildflower display was stunning with the highlight being a colony of Marsh Fragrant Orchids! A frantic family of six Stoats and some secretive birds seen too.

These exquisite photos of a Brilliant Emerald were taken by our guest, Mike Watson, on Saturday – a remarkable day when all three Emerald species were found!

With dreich weather out west, the Cairngorms area was our chosen destination today! A three 'Emerald' day, along with bountiful Northern Damselflies, were the pick of the bunch from the 11 species of Odonata seen today! @BDSdragonflies

Azure Hawkers were hungry in Wester Ross today! In an effort to steer clear of the traditional Loch Maree sites, we checked a new area and were thrilled to get a double-figure count of this enigmatic Aeshna. A terrific supporting cast too! @BDSdragonflies #highlanddragonflies

All of Highland’s speciality dragonflies within yards of each other at a newly explored location in Wester Ross today… quite incredible! Azure Hawkers particularly conspicuous, and doing what they do by landing upon their admirers (left arm)! @BDSdragonflies
