As we celebrate 60 years of Legal Services of Greater Miami, we honor the attorneys and advocates who have helped shape our organization’s legacy of expanding access to justice.
The late Congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart began his career as a staff attorney at Legal Services, carrying with him a lifelong commitment to public service, equal justice, and protecting vulnerable populations. His belief that access to legal representation is essential to a fair society continues to inspire our work today.
Six decades later, that belief continues to guide our work as we advocate for individuals and families across Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.

As we celebrate 60 years of service, we reflect on landmark victories that changed lives. In Pickett v. Heckler, Legal Services successfully fought to restore Social Security benefits to 10,000 Floridians with disabilities who had been wrongfully removed from the program. The 1985 ruling was a major victory for vulnerable individuals and set an important precedent for government accountability. Its impact continues to be felt today.

As we celebrate 60 years of Legal Services of Greater Miami, we’re proud to honor the trailblazing women who helped shape our history and advance the legal profession.
At a time when women were significantly underrepresented in law, Legal Services provided opportunities for talented women attorneys to take on leadership roles, advocate for vulnerable communities, and build distinguished legal careers.
In this video, Elizabeth Du Fresne, Director of Civil Rights Litigation from 1968 to 1971, and Elizabeth Baker, who served as a Staff Attorney and later Managing Attorney from 1978 to 1981, reflect on their time at Legal Services. They share how those early experiences helped shape their careers and the opportunities they were given to make a meaningful impact.
After leaving Legal Services, both went on to achieve remarkable success in their legal careers. Yet their connection to our mission has remained strong. Decades later, they continue to be dedicated supporters of Legal Services, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to equal access to justice and the communities we serve.
