“I believe an important reason I am able to stay is that in many ways I do not stay. I move, in my own very imperfect way, toward the horizon that truly calls to me. The best thing I received from my pioneer ancestors was not a destination but an invitation.” Carol Lynn Pearson

I'm almost certain it won't be a single third party that emerges, but rather a new electoral system that allows multiple parties to gain representation and form coalitions. And yes, it does start to feel inevitable. More polling: newamerica.org/insights/prop…
There are all sorts of procedural and legal reasons why the U.S. has been a two-party country for so long, and I'm not convinced that the rise of a successful third party is imminent, but ... Well, let's put it this way: If and when a successful third party emerges in the next decade, people are going to pass around graphs like this in a "lol this is the most obvious development in modern political history" kind of way

Ben Affleck says AI is simply matrix multiplication, linear algebra and floating point calculations, and however convincingly it sounds like a person, it has nothing to do with thought, humanity or feeling “Nor do I believe, and I think it’s important to draw the distinction between what AI does, which is simply predict the next token or the next word in a sentence, then add that word on, run it back to the machine, do a lot of computation and pick the next word." "That is a very different thing than sentience or thought. And I think we need to be really clear about that because it can be convincingly, in an illusory way, sound like thought or like a person." "But let’s be real clear. This is matrix multiplication. This is linear algebra. These are floating point calculations. It has nothing to do with thought, humanity, or feeling.”
Ben Affleck reveals he writes Python, understands convolutional neural networks, worked extensively with GPUs, and used his celebrity status to get private looks at Google and OpenAI’s video models “I’ve always been kind of into computers since I was young. Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that. “With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor. “You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something. “That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’ “I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”

It's awesome that the leaderships of both major parties in America are fiercely opposed to any version of healthcare reform that doesn't keep health insurance linked to employment.
Hahaha! What an awesome country!

imo dudes are jealous to hear Rogan sound like he likes Dan and to say he hates when people proselytize at him -
Because folks are asking: You will not hear about my personal religious beliefs on any social media, only my scholarship. When I say, "The data indicate that [claim X] is [true/false]," I am *NOT* saying "It is my personal religious belief that [claim X] is [true/false]."

An excellent thread by an emergency medicine physician and toxicology fellow on the misconduct of the Cornell Rapists and the sexual assault they perpetrated. Please read the thread in full.
I think what people are having a hard time understanding is that yeah, Jane Doe went to the frat willingly, probably to hook up with that Matt Ingalls guy. People assume because she consented to sex with him, she must have consented to sex with four, seven however many guys.

Very lovely and interesting sermon from President Chibota. She quoted President Nelson abt labels, but whereas his message was focused on social identity labels, esp. related to sexuality & gender, she focused on eschewing prejudice and a thoroughgoing internationalism. #LDSConf

I wish I wish I wish someone would have educated me or told me this when I was younger. And it’s some of the first pieces of financial advice I give younger folks. TIME IS YOUR FRIEND!!! And you have so much of it!!!!
It still blows my mind that if you max out your Roth IRA at $7,500 a year starting at 25, you’ll have roughly $2.3 million by age 60, completely tax-free. Why aren’t more people doing this?

Scrap the cap and have the rich pay the tax on their full income.
Social Security needs reform, but neither party is willing to take the lead on doing so. If we continue doing nothing, Social Security payouts will be cut automatically by 24% in 2032… That’s only two presidential elections away. 👉🏻 crfb.org/nostatespared

I'm a political scientist, not a theologian. But I can say this: the group that looks the most similar to white evangelicals politically speaking are Latter-day Saints. They are not as Republican or conservative, but closer than any other religious tradition.

After talking to my friend who converted to LDS from Catholicism I find it funny that our evangelizing army’s main goal is to plant doubts in other humans’ systems of beliefs… and then get them to lean into said questions we provide answers to.
The #LDS phrase "doubt your doubts" creates a double standard, inherently privileging faith and tradition over critical thinking, and dismissing legitimate concerns as mere emotional flaws.

PS I don’t think that’s what uchtdorf is asking us to do just think the converts perspective is interesting.
