#GLWhiskey - WhistlePig The Boss Hog V - The Spirit of Mauve Edition - Straight Rye Whiskey - 59.2% When #DavePickerell died Nov 1, 2018, he had just been in town, Phoenix AZ, conducting a #SpiritofMauve tasting at The Tavern. This #TheBossHog rye was a game changer for me. There were no other examples of #rye finished in calvados barrels before. What I found was nothing short of sublime. The way the spicy rye backbone paired with the apple brandy was amazing. The calvados toned down a blistering rye behemoth and added so much complexity bringing balance and nuance to the dram. Not to mention Dave's unmatched ability to choose the perfect single barrels from #MGP, a mass producer. But who would have questioned him? Afterall, that's how WhistlePig 10yr became the flagship and kickstarted a new era of rye. Bottled at #caskstrength (it's said 32 barrels bottled but I've seen more, this one at 118.4), this #singlebarrel is one of the best, most complex rye whiskies I've had in my entire career. No doubt high wheat count with its copious sweetness and round, oily texture boasting 90 proof. Fairly simplistic and very hedonistic, sticky sweet and malty with the usual flavors you'd expect in a corn-based whiskey. If you like this fat, gummy, sweet style give er' a go. #GLWhiskey - Maker's Mark 2024 The Lost Recipe Series Edition 01 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky, 55.95% Thank you, Maker's Mark for upping your game. I'm really enjoying these cask strength versions the last few years. This specimen is deep and rich in color with aromas of candied, slow baked, zesty stone fruit and apples drowning in caramel. Viscous and bold on the tongue with generous misgivings of pecan pie/crust, a bit of mocha, finishing long with hints of wintergreen and red-hot cinnamon sticks. It's over the top and very hedonistic. The high abv saves the day with its fine-tuned balancing act. Otherwise, she'd go off the rails on the gravy train.
