“‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’
I have seen quite a number of arguments surrounding this scripture in 1 John 1:9.
Should we confess our sins or not? What exactly does the confession of sins mean?
Some argue that confessing our sins means acknowledging and admitting the wrong things we have done. Others argue that it means acknowledging and accepting the forgiveness of sins.
Some even go as far as suggesting that John was transactional in his thinking when he wrote, “If we confess…”
But I have always been fascinated by something else in this verse.
Two words: FAITHFUL and JUST.
The fact that my forgiveness and cleansing are presented as demonstrations of God’s faithfulness and justice is something I cannot thank Him enough for.
Think about it.
He forgives me, not because He is obligated to overlook my sins, but because He is faithful and just.
My forgiveness is not a contradiction of His nature. It is a demonstration of it.
HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST!
