Cloudflare spent 6 weeks chasing a bug in the hyper Rust HTTP library. The fix was 4 lines. 🦀 The symptom: image responses returning HTTP 200 but with truncated data : a 14.9 MB response arriving as 219 KB, no errors logged anywhere. The root cause: a single `let _ =` in hyper's dispatch loop discarding a `Poll::Pending` signal from the flush operation. The socket buffer filled up, flush returned pending, but hyper ignored it and called shutdown anyway, dropping the remaining data silently. What made it so hard to find: → Only happened in production, never with curl → Only triggered for large images under real concurrency → Disappeared when strace was broadened (slowed things just enough to shift timing) → All application-level logs reported success The breakthrough came from strace : kernel-level syscall tracing, which showed shutdown being called after just one write, with 14.8 MB still in the buffer. The bug existed in hyper across multiple major versions (0.14 through 1.8). It was invisible because most readers drain data fast enough that the socket buffer never fills. A new, faster intermediary introduced just enough backpressure to expose it. Fix is now merged upstream in hyperium/hyper PR #4018. A masterclass in debugging async Rust at the systems level. 🔗 blog.cloudflare.com/hyper-bu… #RustLang #AsyncRust #Hyper #SystemsProgramming #Debugging #OpenSource #Cloudflare

ACTIVE DIRECTORY MIGRATION: PROPER CLEANUP, PROPER SETUP, and A LOT OF AD/GP READING TIPS! As a part of the final steps of migrating Active Directory to a new domain controller, or domain controllers, where the FSMO Roles and Time Role have been transferred successfully to our new PDCe we offline the source DC(s). We do so for 30 days as a rule as any gremlins or hidden gems will almost always show up within the first 48 hours ... but just in case. CRITICAL STEP - _MSDCS NS SERVERS The first thing to do post 30 days is to make sure the _msdcs folder has the correct NS servers assigned as of that day. It also needs to be grey in colour to indicate AD DNS is healthy. CRITICAL STEP - BACK UP THE PREVIOUS PDCe We then take a final backup of the previous PDCe FSMO Role holder. CRITICAL STEP - METADATA and DNS CLEANUP We delete the old DC VM(s) then run a metadata cleanup in AD Sites & Services (NTDSUtil if stubborn) and DNS cleanup (NS and AD Folders). 1: DELETE their AD Object in the DC OU 2: DELETE their DNS A IP records 3: DELETE their DNS NS records 4: COMB & DELETE all AD FOLDER DNS references 5: VERIFY the _msdcs stub zone as above CRITICAL CONSIDERATION - TOMBSTONE LIFETIME Now, one should check the Tombstone Lifetime to verify if it is set to 30 days or not: (Get-ADObject "cn=Directory Service,cn=Windows NT,cn=Services,cn=Configuration,DC=yourdomain,DC=com" -properties "tombstonelifetime").tombstonelifetime If the tombstone lifetime is 30 days then change that setting to 45. It can be changed back once the migration is complete. Ours is set to the default 180 days. CRITICAL STEP - VERIFY FSMO # Check FSMO Get-ADForest | Format-Table SchemaMaster,DomainNamingMaster Get-ADDomain | Format-Table PDCEmulator,RIDMaster,InfrastructureMaster CRITICAL STEP - AD REPLICATION REPADMIN /REPLSUM RepAdmin /ShowReps RepAdmin /ShowRepl RepAdmin /viewlist * RepAdmin /SyncAll RepAdmin /KCC Dfsrdiag pollad Dfsrdiag ReplicationState dfsdiag /testdcs /domain:HQ.MyCompany.Com Dcdiag /e /test:sysvolcheck /test:advertising net share CRITICAL STEP - AD OBJECT and GPO Create a Test User on the PDCe Verify that user on other DCs Create a Test GPO on the PDCe Verify the GUID and Date in SYSVOL Check Other DCs \\MyOtherDC\SYSVOL Edit the above on another DC FURTHER READING AND TIPS Phantoms, tombstones, and the infrastructure master learn.microsoft.com/en-us/tr… Active Directory replication Event ID 2042: It has been too long since this machine replicated learn.microsoft.com/en-us/tr… Reanimating Active Directory Tombstone Objects (Very Detailed) learn.microsoft.com/en-us/pr… How to create and manage the Central Store for Group Policy Administrative Templates in Windows learn.microsoft.com/en-us/tr… Enable the AD Recycle Bin # TODO AD Recycle Bin $Domain = "MyDomain" $TLD = "Com" Enable-ADOptionalFeature -Identity "CN=Recycle Bin Feature,CN=Optional Features,CN=Directory Service,CN=Windows NT,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=$($Domain),DC=$($TLD)" -Scope ForestOrConfigurationSet -Target "$($Domain).$($TLD)"

‼️ Claude Fable 5 wrote a booting, NT-shaped Rust kernel in 38 minutes, with later work on Claude Opus growing it to run real Windows binaries. Security startup Tolmo published a transcript-level account of Claude Fable 5 writing a booting, NT-shaped kernel in Rust from an empty directory in 38 minutes of active model work. By the company's account it built the trusted computing base, booted in an emulator, passed its own self-tests, and root-caused its own low-level bugs, then over 8 more days, mostly on Claude Opus 4.8, grew to load unmodified Windows drivers and run real Windows binaries.

Rust promises zero-cost abstractions. But how well does it actually deliver? 🦀 Two researchers dug deep, studying the compiler, modifying it, and collecting real performance data for a talk at C++Russia 2026. 150+ slides covering Rust's performance trade-offs in a systematic, data-driven way. Possibly the most comprehensive treatment of the topic to date. Slides + repo: 🔗 github.com/yugr/rust-slides/ #Rust #RustLang #SystemsProgramming #Performance #Compilers #CPlusPlus

🦔Microsoft canceled its internal Claude Code licenses this week after token-based billing made the cost untenable, even for a company with effectively infinite cloud resources. Uber's CTO sent an internal memo warning the company burned through its entire 2026 AI budget in just four months. American AI software prices have jumped 20% to 37%, and GitHub (owned by Microsoft) is dropping flat-rate plans for usage-based billing across its products. My Take The AI subsidy era is ending in real time. The same company that put $13 billion into OpenAI and built the Azure infrastructure powering most of Anthropic's compute just looked at the bill from a competitor's coding tool and decided it was not worth paying. That is not a productivity failure on Anthropic's end. Token-based pricing is forcing every enterprise customer to confront the actual cost of running these models at scale, and the number turns out to be far higher than the flat-rate experiments suggested. This ties directly to my Gemini Flash post yesterday. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google all raised effective prices in the last six months. Enterprises that built workflows assuming AI costs would keep falling are now watching annual budgets evaporate in months. Two outcomes look likely from here. Either enterprises scale back AI usage to fit budgets, which slows the revenue ramp the labs need to justify their valuations ahead of IPOs, or the labs cut prices and absorb the losses, which makes the unit economics worse at exactly the wrong moment. Both paths land in the same place, the numbers stop working, and somebody has to take the writedown. Hedgie🤗

Introducing Carbon 🧬 a family of open generative DNA foundation models. Carbon-3B matches Evo2-7B while running 250x faster at inference. It can generate new DNA sequences and score the functional impact of mutations, zero-shot. We borrowed a lot from how modern LLMs are trained, but DNA isn't language. Genomes are noisy, redundant, and shaped by evolution rather than communication. So we adjusted the recipe: Tokenizer. Most genomic models tokenize at the nucleotide/character level, which blows up sequence length. BPE is the obvious LLM-style fix, but it doesn't behave well on DNA. We use deterministic 6-mer tokens (one token = 6 nucleotides): 6× shorter sequences and cheaper attention. Training loss. With 6-mer tokens, cross-entropy scores a prediction that gets 5/6 nucleotides right the same as one that's completely wrong. This gets brittle late in training and produces loss spikes. We switch mid-training to a more flexible factorized loss (FNS). Data. Genomes are mostly sparse, repetitive background. We curate down to a staged functional DNA + mRNA mixture, with every ratio chosen by ablation, like mixing a web corpus, but for biology. We're releasing the models, training data, training code, evaluation suite, and a demo to play with. More details in the technical report: github.com/huggingface/carbo… Demo to play with the model, with a biology primer for our ML friends ;) huggingface.co/spaces/Huggin…
