In Memoriam: Six Years After Lekki Massacre
Today, we pause to remember the lives lost and the many wounded at the Lekki Toll Gate on 20 October 2020. Six years on, the pain of that night remains fresh for the families, friends and loved ones of those affected. On behalf of myself and the entire members of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) Lagos State Chapter, and all Lagosians, I extend my deepest commiserations and solidarity to every family still grieving. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the living find strength and comfort.
What occurred that evening was a grave assault on the rights of Nigerian citizens. Unarmed young people who had gathered to demand an end to police brutality were met with force, a similar effort championed by myself and others as far back as 2017 at Fela Shrine in Ikeja, when Kolade Johnson and other young Lagosians were gunned down by a trigger happy police officers across the State. In any society that claims to be governed by law, the protection of life, liberty and property is non-negotiable. The rule of law is not a slogan; it is the foundation that separates a just state from arbitrary power. When the state itself is perceived to have failed in its most basic duty, the safety of its people, trust is broken, and the wounds take years to heal.
Accountability is the only path to healing. No individual, however highly placed, however connected, or however influential, is above the law. Those who gave orders, those who carried them out, and those who have obstructed justice must face the full weight of due process. Justice delayed is justice denied, and continued silence or impunity only deepens the trauma of the victims and the cynicism of the citizenry. We must insist that the truth be established, that victims and their families receive recognition and redress, and that mechanisms are put in place so that such a tragedy is never repeated.
As we mark this sixth anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to a Nigeria in which the rights of every citizen are protected, in which the security agencies serve the people rather than intimidate them, and in which the rule of law is applied equally to the powerful and the ordinary. The memory of those who fell at Lekki must strengthen our resolve to build a country where lives are valued, dissent is respected, and no one is too big to be held accountable.
We will never forget.

Something is wrong in Kwara State’s hospitals, and the people who will feel it most are the ones who can least afford to.
According to the Nigerian Medical Association, Kwara doctors are among the lowest paid in Nigeria. Now come reports of monthly salary deductions of ₦30,000 to ₦50,000, unpaid allowances, and wards stretched thin by a shortage of doctors. Things got bad enough that doctors downed tools in a seven-day warning strike over a 2% KwaraCare deduction, the non-implementation of CONMESS, and outstanding allowances.
Ask yourself: how can a doctor give a patient their best when they are fighting just to be paid properly? In some general hospitals, only a handful of doctors are left to carry the load, working long, exhausting hours. When those doctors burn out, or leave Kwara for better pay elsewhere, who is left behind? The market woman, the farmer, the family that cannot afford a private hospital.
The government says it has implemented 100% CONMESS and that doctors are paid salaries and allowances on time. Yet the complaints keep coming. Both claims cannot be fully true, and Kwarans are left to wonder which one is.
@RealAARahman and his team can end the confusion. They should:
1. Publish the details of the deductions
2. Account for every outstanding payment
3. Announce a clear timeline for recruiting more doctors
Healthcare is no place for politics. A poor man carrying his sick child into a government hospital deserves the same care as anyone else.
Kwara people want answers. Kwara doctors want fairness. And the government must settle this dispute now, before more patients pay the price.

Kwara Is Short of Doctors, Yet Those Available Are Complaining of Poor Pay and Illegal Deductions. What Exactly Is the Government Doing?
Kwara State is already grappling with a shortage of doctors, and now reports of poor remuneration and alleged illegal salary deductions among medical professionals raise even more concerns about the state of our healthcare system.
We need to ask ourselves some honest questions. How do you expect to attract and retain competent doctors when those already working in the state’s health facilities are lamenting poor pay and questionable deductions from their salaries? How do you expect a doctor to give their best when their own welfare is being neglected?
The situation is particularly worrying given the shortage of medical personnel in the state. Instead of creating an environment that encourages doctors to stay and serve, the government should be prioritising competitive remuneration, better working conditions and policies that make public hospitals attractive to qualified professionals.
You cannot complain about a shortage of doctors while neglecting the welfare of the few who remain. You cannot keep talking about improving healthcare when the people expected to deliver that improvement are raising concerns about how they are treated.
And let us not forget who ultimately suffers when doctors are discouraged from working in public hospitals. It is the ordinary Kwaran who cannot afford expensive private healthcare, the pregnant woman who needs urgent medical attention, the accident victim who needs immediate treatment and the family that depends on a public hospital for survival.
Healthcare is too important to be reduced to political propaganda. A functioning health system requires more than renovated buildings, commissioned projects and press statements. It requires enough qualified medical personnel, decent working conditions, fair salaries and a government that understands that doctors are human beings with families and responsibilities of their own.
The government must urgently address the reported salary deductions, explain the reasons behind them and ensure that doctors receive fair and transparent remuneration. It must also confront the shortage of medical personnel with a credible recruitment and retention plan.
Kwarans deserve a healthcare system that works, and our doctors deserve a government that values their service.
If the government cannot adequately cater to the welfare of the doctors it already has, what confidence should Kwarans have that it can solve the shortage and deliver the quality of healthcare they deserve?

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, former Governor of Delta State.
Like me, Dr. Uduaghan was a medical doctor before entering public life, and he brought the instinct to care for others into his years in office.
He served as governor while I was Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum, and working with him, I came to see him as a man of peace, one who understood that little could be achieved where people could not live together in harmony. That is the man I knew, and that is how I will continue to remember him.
On behalf of my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs. Roli Uduaghan, their children, the entire Uduaghan family, and the government and people of Delta State.
He will be dearly missed.
Minister Matawalle leads eight Zamfara lawmakers to Tinubu, pledges APC loyalty
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has led eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly to meet President Bola Tinubu, where they reaffirmed their loyalty to the All Progressives Congress and the President ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The meeting comes amid political disagreements in Zamfara State as political actors position themselves ahead of the elections.
Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara State, led the lawmakers to the meeting with Tinubu in a move aimed at strengthening their commitment to the APC.
The minister's Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Sunday.
According to the statement, the lawmakers reaffirmed their support for Tinubu and expressed their determination to remain in the ruling party.
They also pledged to support the progress of the APC ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Following the meeting, Matawalle promised to integrate the lawmakers into the Tinubu Again Movement, a political platform established to mobilise support for the President.
The minister said the lawmakers would work collectively for Tinubu and all APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
KWASU, built during the administration of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has given many young people the opportunity to pursue higher education without going far from home. This is the kind of development that can benefit not just Kwara but Nigeria as a whole.
The Shonga Farms project also showed the importance of investing in agriculture. Today, Nigeria still struggles to feed its people and spends so much money importing food. We need leaders who think ahead, create opportunities and tackle real problems. That is the kind of leadership we should be talking about when we discuss people like Dr. Saraki.

Ghana Must Go Politics: Who Is Paying for APC's Sudden Love for the People?
By:
The APC lacks every sense of human morality. Whenever you think they have reached the lowest point possible, they surprise you by going even lower. Just when you think the government cannot sink any further, they find another way to remind Kwarans that there is seemingly no limit to their desperation.
Now, we are hearing reports that people living with disabilities are being profiled, their account details collected, and stipends distributed under a process allegedly coordinated by the APC.
Can you imagine the height of desperation? The same people who have suffered neglect, whose conditions have barely received the attention they deserve, are suddenly being remembered with stipends as the election approaches. The Kwara State Government is now being accused of exploiting the vulnerability of persons with disabilities, seemingly on the assumption that people who need financial support will find it difficult to turn down the money when the time comes to ask for their votes.
Persons living with disabilities deserve support, dignity and inclusion. They deserve policies that improve their lives, opportunities that enable them to thrive, and a government that recognises their rights beyond election season. They do not deserve to be treated as another category of voters to be mobilised with cash, If the government genuinely cares about them, why should their welfare suddenly become this urgent at a time when political interests are at stake?
By the end of December, the APC may have exhausted every penny available to it in Kwara State in this desperate attempt to win back the people. The rate at which money is suddenly being pumped into political activities is alarming. One can only wonder whether the party is spending its own money or the sweat and resources of the people it has governed for years.
Perhaps one way Kwarans will begin to understand the nature of this spending is to watch what happens when the government no longer has access to public resources. Will the same generosity continue when there are no elections to win?
begin with this election season.
And the reckless, shameful spending we are witnessing has gone beyond economically questionable projects. We are now hearing allegations of cash being distributed to vulnerable groups in what appears to be an effort to secure political loyalty.
At this rate, the government might as well keep those Ghana-Must-Go bags close. If the allegations about cash distribution are true, they will need those bags for more than carrying money around. They may need them to pack their belongings out of the Government House after February 6.
Again, this is what happens when a political party has no clear ideology to sell to the people. Instead of building a record of performance that citizens can point to with pride, it appears to rely increasingly on propaganda, financial inducements and the distribution of money to create the impression that something is being done. Why was this programme not domiciled under the Ministry of Social Development, Why take a programme of this nature away from the proper government structure and allegedly allow it to be coordinated by the APC? Could it be that the government wants to keep the process away from public scrutiny because it knows the difference between providing social support and using people's vulnerability for political advantage?
Welfare is a responsibility, not a campaign gift. Public money is not a personal war chest. And human dignity must never become the price of political survival.
For a united, functional, and well-prepared Lagos State ready for the next phase of economic development, Laja Adeoye of the APM is the candidate to vote for.

Politics has given Nigerians more slogans than achievements. Yet one man has contributed greatly to Nigeria and its people without leaning on a slogan, because he believes in strengthening institutions and creating an environment where people can thrive: Dr. Bukola Saraki is that man.
As the elections draw closer, let the conversation be about what kind of leader Nigeria needs at a time when the world is developing rapidly. What must change? What must be strengthened?
I believe many Nigerians would want the country run the way Dr. Saraki led the 8th Senate.
Going forward, let us prioritise capacity and an excellent track record.
