Greatly honoured. I am awarded the 4th IA Research Grant by the prestigious human rights organization of Pakistan, @HRCP87 @hrw @UNHumanRights @ILDecade @UN_HRC @unescobangkok @_ELProject @OHCHRAsia
HRCP is pleased to announce that linguist and researcher @zubairtorwali has been awarded the fourth I. A. Rehman Research Grant for 2023/24. His findings will be published and disseminated by HRCP.
Instituted in honour of the veteran journalist, human rights defender, and former honorary spokesperson of HRCP, the I. A. ‘Torwali English Dictionary for Students’ with pictures published by #IBT
Despite many odds and obstacles, and with meager resources we, the team IBT, has not given up the work on the revitalization and reclamation of our loved mother language Torwali and continuously provide reading, learning and research materials in and about Torwali.
The ‘Torwali-English-Dictionary of Students’ is one of such endeavors which we have recently been able to accomplish.
What is in it and for whom it is meant? Below are a few characteristics:
Design and layout:
It is in four colors and is in good quality paper. It is in the international book format, larger than A5 and smaller than A4. It is about 230 pages long with cover in paper back.
Contents:
1. It contains about 2500 Torwali words as head words. It has also about 1200 pictures of things, places, animals, plants and actions.
2. It is right-to-left. Each headword is provided with IPA pronunciation and translated into English alternatives which range from one to five senses.
3. Abbreviations for parts of speech are given for each word.
4. Then each word is used in an example sentence in Torwali. An English translation to the example sentence is provided for each sentence.
5. One unique quality of this dictionary is its focus on the dialectical, free, spelling and inflexion variants of many words which are indicated with the abbreviation assigned for expressing the variants.
6. Torwali has two dialects known as Bahrain/Senkaen and Chail. A symbol [چ] is given to indicate the Chail dialect.
7. After these details a picture is provided for almost half of number of the words. These pictures are captioned in Torwali.
8. Wherever there are unique animals and plants particular to the Torwali land in Swat in the dictionary a Scientific Name mentioned as Sc. Name is also provided.
9. Few anthropological notes are also provided for few important words.
10. English gloss and translation are given as per the modern usage of English.
For whom:
1. The dictionary as the name mentioned is for Students of all ages but it can benefit the linguists and researchers equally.
2. It is useful for the students from grade 5th to PhD and is very beneficial for youth who are exposed to other languages for the Torwali words may help them to understand their native language.
3. It is also very useful for the Torwali teachers who teach English.
4. A native Torwali can learn English through Torwali while using the dictionary whereas a non-Torwali can learn Torwali through English by using this dictionary.
Cost:
As mentioned earlier it is colored hence it came with much cost.
The price is set as PKR 1200/ per copy. However, for Torwali and non-Torwali students there is 50 percent discount and the price for them is PKR 600/ only.
For researchers and the general public, the price is, however, PKR 1200/.
We charge this discounted price so that we may be able to print other books in Torwali which are ready to go to printing. We anticipate full cooperation from the Torwali and research communities.
Final note:
Prefaces to the dictionary were written by well established scholars and experts in the fields such as:
1. Dr. Tariq Rehman, the renowned scholar, historian and linguist in Pakistan
2. Dr. Susan Malone, PhD, who has been consultant to UNESCO on language in education and literacy in mother languages.
