Probably going to be completely overlooked by the media but today is the 200th birthday of photography as a medium and that’s pretty cool
The world celebrates the 100th anniversary of photography. 100 years ago today, on October 6, 1826, Nicéphore Niépce took the earliest surviving photograph, “View from the Window at Le Gras.”

A woman farming a monster’s back. Carved in stone near Cahokia. The Birger figurine shows her working a toothed serpent with a hoe. Its tail becomes a vine bearing squash or gourds. Often interpreted as an Earth Mother, she’s cultivating the creature itself.

Some good news
On 18 May 1980, Mount St Helens exploded sideways. The blast flattened forests for miles and hurled thousands of trees into nearby Spirit Lake. Remarkably, 46 years later, many are still floating there. But, inevitably, there’s a twist… 1/n

In Eastern Europe, the last ingredient in campfire fish soup is a burning log, so we caught some fish this morning and tried it: - fish (we caught 3 different types) - potatoes, carrot, onion, celery, garlic, dill, parsley, chilli, black pepper, salt - cooked over an open fire - a shot of vodka at the end - then the last step: a smouldering piece of wood dunked in for a few seconds The soup is called ukha, an old fishermen's tradition in Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe. The burned wood gives it a smoky taste and supposedly takes the bitterness out. So good!

The Venezuelan Poodle Moth probably the craziest insect you have seen all day!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The images do not show the Venezuelan poodle moth, an unidentified species known from one 2009 photo by Dr. Arthur Anker; such viral images are typically needle-felted sculptures or other moths like Bombyx mori. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venezuela… snopes.com/fact-check/ven… thephotographicalist.wordpress.com/2015/12/10/the… flickr.com/photos/artour_…

A Stone Age Arrow Surfaces in Jotunheimen, Norway In three weeks this summer, the Secrets of the Ice team recovered 48 prehistoric arrows from the Langfonne, Storfonne and Handklefonne ice patches. The oldest is a slate arrowhead, 5,000 to 6,000 years old, still carrying fragments of its wooden shaft and traces of its original binding. Alongside it came a complete 3,600-year-old arrow tipped with freshwater mussel shell. For most of the project's 20 years, finds dated to the last two millennia. Now the oldest ice is melting, and the oldest objects are surfacing with it. The archaeologists expect most of these ice patches to vanish within two decades. Every arrow rescued is a hunt remembered. The race is on.

Some good news
Well, this is otterly unexpected. A visitor captured video of a North American river otter swimming at Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, marking the first time the species has ever been documented at the park.
