Dr. @Le_grin_grin (@_AfricanUnion – @IOMatAU Migration Ambassador for Central Africa and Advocacy Specialist at the @_CSVR) stressed that protecting migrants’ rights requires more than stating that migrants do not lose their rights when they cross a border.
It requires mechanisms that can protect those #rights across jurisdictions. He highlighted challenges such as migrant workers losing access to social security contributions and savings after deportation, trafficking cases becoming difficult to address when jurisdictions and authorities fail to coordinate, and gaps in protection when migrants move between countries.
He called on #civilsociety to link legal aid providers across countries of origin, transit and destination, make greater use of binding legal instruments and human rights mechanisms, and pursue the regionalization of #justice through regional courts and institutions.
He also urged African states to protect their citizens beyond their own borders, including through stronger consular protection, so that migrants can receive protection and assistance wherever they are.
